Okay some of you know that my husband has become an amatuer radio operator. He would like to have a small radio tower in our yard which I am totally against unless it will benefit my halloween addiction in some way. Yes i know that its totally selfish, but this is a 25ft thing sittin on our roof year round. I should be able to use it somehow for a month right??? After seeing the group buy offered for the radio transmitter I wanted this year. He spoke with some of his radio friends and they said he would need a comercial license. Im not sure if its true...but who cares if it gets me the use of the radio at my house instead of blasting music on speakers that pissed off my neighbors. Okay sooo to get to the point of this thread....HAUNTERS ACROSS THE LAND...Please help me come up with some call signs for my radio station. I want to put the call letters up in lights. Im hoping for something halloween related like KBOO, but not ya know. Its gotta be with a K or W im not sure which one. THanks so much for all your ideas in advance.

Most Commercial radio stations use call letters that are a compressed/ version of what they call themselves, for instance:
KATM - CAT Country
KHKK - The HAWK
If you go with the same idea, you get a TON more possibilities to play around with....Cryptkeeper - Screamyard Cemetery

It has to start with a W since your east of the mighty Mississippi, don’t ask me why they made the dividing line. So how about WHELL ;-)

First, congrats to ur hubby on his new hobby
I've been a ham abt 15yrs now.. the wife too.. you should look into the hobby.. is easy to get ur license.. Ok, Spookzilla is right, since your east of the Ol' Miss, it would need to start with a W.. .and 3 or 4 letters.. ..WAIL would be good... (trivia - there is only one station east of the Mississippi that starts with a K, it's KDKA in Pittsburgh)..

The license requirement is based upon the output power of the transmitter. If you are broadcasting with very low power (<1 watt), good enough for a 200-400 yard radius, you do not need a license. You can buy a number of VLPFM transmitters from hobbytron.com and none are particularly expensive. Most VLPFM transmitters have a built-in whip antenna. Some of the more advanced models will also take an external antenna. All gain transmission distance from having the antenna above tree level.
If you are interested in a 1-3 mile radius (10-1000 watts), you can get a low power community radio fm license (LPFM). You can read about LPFM at: http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/lpfm/ You can expect to spend $2K+ for an FCC approved transmitter. Plus, of course, you'll need a proper antenna on top of that tower. And, because the FCC is involved, you'll need to create a community organization to sponser your radio station (WDEAD, voice of the Halloween Haunters of Poughkipsee!).
If you go beyond 1000 watts, you need a commercial broadcast license ($$$$$$$) and commercial broadcast equipment ($$$$$$$$$).
