I set up some of my Halloween decor on Labor day or the weekend after. I have a lot, and I just pace myself. I set up the tombstones mainly and my haunted fence. The responses: Oh you are setting up for Halloween already! What the ----? Too early, the kids just went back to school. You get the picture.
Today I picked up the kids from school this house had a Santa up, christmas lights, several inflatable (they were deflated) but you could tell they were there. I bet no one says anything other then "Well it is that time of year" On October 28th I saw a jack o lantern among many christmas items that house was confused.. I guess I am just venting.

We've got several houses around here that have their Xmas lights up on the house (not lit though thank goodness!) So I guess folks are takin' advantage of the nice weather. I don't care as long as they don't light up until after Thanksgiving.

well thanks for venting this
i feel the same exact way you do ......here halloween in stores was and is always forgotten because their wore christmas all over the isles , why doesnt a store even try and order original animated halloween props and lots of them for once and see what happens ??? ....everybody that visited us wanted to know where they could buy those props so some people must be interested in buying some.....
and i get the same comments you do when i start the set up early in september but the people in town here knows we do a big set up so they understand why , last year and this year on our road their was a guy with christmas lights in october lite up even on halloween
aaaaaaaaarrrrrgrrrrrrrrrrrrr
and the guy you saw today with all his christmas stuff out probably didnt get comments on how early he was....
But you have to put yourself in this person's shoes putting out xmas stuff that early , he probably enjoys christmas as much as you do halloween or have kids like my girl and he wanted to replace the empty yard after halloween with the christmas stuff .....i know cause my daugther came home from daycare and started to cry because we took down pretty much everything outside today so .....A Witch from Canada

It seems to be a common thing to think that Halloween isn't as decorated a holiday as Christmas.
Most non-Halloweeners are just now starting to notice the Halloween decor the last 5 years or so.
The earlier that the retailers put out the Christmas stuff, the earlier the people will buy and decorate.
I can remember when people didn't put up x-mas lights until the first week of December, and now it's pretty accepted that the weekend after turkey day is good - or even earlier.
I don't actually mind x-mas stuff up early, as long as the lights go out by 9 pm and there isn't any loud music.

Gosh I know what you are talking about!!! It is like Halloween is becoming an afterthought. I had to walk through Thanksgiving and Christmas stuff to find Halloween items in the stores. And this was in September!
I hope that Halloween becomes bigger - more festive with more participation. If stores got people excited about it, it would help. you know... the whole consumer thing.. :-)

I hate to see Christmas stuff out before Thanksgiving as well. Mine normally goes up the day or weekend after Thanksgiving. But this year I took all of my normal decor down to put out the Halloween stuff and I'm really dreading putting it back out just to take it down again in less than a month! Maybe my house will just be bare until time for the Christmas decor to go up.

To tell the truth, I kind of like Halloween being the "outsider" holiday. Makes folks like us a little bit more memorable to the kids, and even the parents, if they're cool that is.
Not to mention, look what happened to Christmas. It became sooooo commercial and crammed down our throats, that people who used to love it can't stand it anymore!
So, light your lights and trim your trees. Face it, we're cool and you're not!Feels like...somebody just walked over my grave. Did you find it?

I second that!
Thanksgiving is getting buried deeper and becoming lost in the mix. It is a shame. I love Thanksgiving and especially to give thanks to a great Halloween season!

BTW, at Kmart today all of the "Harvest" items that would be considered Thanksgiving decorations are lumped with the Halloween items and are 50% off.

From Real Time with Bill Maher this past week or so:
Maher: “New rule, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas must be combined into one single super-holiday called Thankshallowismas. That way you only have to get together with your bats*** family once, in a costume, for candy, presents, and a big turkey dinner. Then it’s everybody into the den to watch football until your drunken uncle calls your cousin a wh*re.”

I don't like christmas decor simply because it all looks the same. It is also too cold usually to walk the neighborhood to look at the decorated houses but halloween has just the right temps for site seeing
