I've been trying to get some decent pictures of my yard set, but my Digital Camera (8meg Fuji) just can't grab enough light to focus clearly. I'm sticking with ground level floods, and the "in person" visual view is quite good.
I'm considering borrowing a better camera - but should I be looking for any particular Spec? - i.e., SLR, Len Size...?

Use a tripod, and slow your shutter and adjust the aperture settings.
Your camera probably has a setting for low light, no flash. You HAVE to use a tripod, unless you are as steady as a sniper.
It may even be beneficial to use the timer or remote if you have it. The simple act of pushing the button can sometimes give it too much shake.
Do a search here, this topic has been covered numerous times... and good luck!
