so i was in JoAnn Fabrics yesterday, and all of their halloween stuff is 70%. i asked the sales girl if the prices would drop even further this week since the season will be over. she said the 70% will be through the rest of this week and then they pitch what's left. i asked if she meant pitch as in throw away...and she said yes. they actually lose less money by throwing it away then selling it for any less than 70% off.
of course my next question was where do you throw it away...
she said the dumpster right behind the store.
now, i don't condone dumpster diving...never done it myself...but you can bet your sweet booty that next weekend i'll be lookin in that dumpster behind JoAnn's after the store closes.
is this excusable due to my severe halloween addiction...or am i just a crazy lady on a dumpster dive expedition? hahaha!! anyone else gonna take a look in a JoAnns dumpster next weekend?

I guess the Spirit store in my area does the same thing.
I'm too chicken to give it a go.

I worked at a Spirit store last year and they packed everything up and took it all to storage. They only things they got rid of were a couple displays that didn't work anymore. Since I was in good with the boss, she let me take all the broken stuff home. There almost wasn't any room in the car for me and my bro-in-law..

Dumpster diving for new stuff? That's a no-brainer!

OK, no problem with dumpster diving here but i am concfused about one thing: how do you lose less money by throwing something out than by selling at a reduced price? I always assumed something was better than nothing...

my friend and i are going to make it a night and go to a few different JoAnns stores. i wish i could be sure of when they throw it away. i'll be embarrassed...and i'm sure we'll laugh hysterically as one plays "diver" and the other is "lookout". i'm seeing it as a fun little adventure. and besides, think about what kind of trash will be in their dumpster...someone's left overs from lunch will be about the worst. it's not like it will be full of hot smell garbage.
as for the loss of money...it could be as simple as if they keep the stuff around and discount it further they are losing money on other things that could take that shelf space...plus paying employees to take care of and sell the stuff and not getting it's worth anyway.having children is like being pecked to death by a duck

That's why at wal-Mart and K-Mart they have an enclosed trash compactor. Both companies make you throw written off merchandise in there so it can't be gotten out, and returned for a refund. And you're right that a majority of the time if they file a claim back to the manufactuer they can usually get ALL of their cost back.
