I read a thread the other day about how long most carved pumpkins last. I was wondering if any preservation methods from the net actually work. I have heard/read about people coating their pumpkins inside and out with WD-40. Does this really work?

I've never heard of that one.
Using a bleach solution (1cup to 1 quart of water) and soaking the carved pumpkin will cut down on the bacteria and fungus.
Using vaseline after will keep the pumpkin hydrated.
I've also heard of using lemon juice in a diliuted spray and coating the cut parts and insides.I'm a Halloween Bride! 10/31/2002

I always coat the inside and outside with petroleum jelly. Light coat on the outside, and heavier coat on the inside...usually lasts outside a good 2 weeks, depending on the weather.
I've never heard of WD-40.
I also don't use candles in my pumpkins, I use lights. Lower heat = less dry-out.Why rule the living when you can control the dead.

I've used vaseline successfully. soaking them in water will sometimes bring them back if they dry out too soon.

None of mine have ever lived long enough to rot. They always end up tossed in the street by some punk long before halloween.

Sorry to hear that! We've only ever had one pumpkin smashed, and it was because we left it out by the lightpost.
Back O/T, I've heard of schmearing vaseline or using lemon on the cut parts, but I have a large amount of vinegar on hand, and I'm wondering if anyone's tried that?
Not exactly O/T, we've recently had mad squirrelys eating at our uncarved ones, so we've been using tabasco sauce on them. Seems to detter them some.Haunt to Live ... Live to Haunt

WD-40 is HIGHLY flammable.
As kids we'd use that stuff like a flame thrower.
Sounds like a bad and interesting idea. : )
