When I was young, my parents were poor.
To a point they could have easily sought govt assistance. But, we did not. Proud bunch.
My dad worked for the railroad. When he could. They would lay him off months at a time, and he would find work as a handyman during those times.
I still remember shopping with my mom back then. It's an experience that sticks with me today:
We had a clicker. While I don't recall the amounts, we had so much we could spend on meat, bread, etc. And we'ld add it up as we grabbed things. We'ld shop where they sold older meats nearing expiration dates, a special bakery selling older breads, etc.
To my moms credit, miraculously there was always something on the table. I can't say we ever went hungry. Now, at times, it was bread and water, but there was always food.
Mom also made our clothes. And, grandma bought us a pair of shoes each Christmas.
Thus it was at age 8, I lied about my age (said I was 12) and got a job at a local vegetable farm. What did I do with my money? I bought a used bike, some "real" school clothes. I was quite excited to have actual brand name stuff. A locket for my mom, and some ice cream for me and my brothers.
What does this have to do with Halloween?
Halloween was always that one time of the year money didn't matter.
Whatever we wanted to be, we would make the costume. And they always seemed to look better than our friends in their store bought costumes. It was that one time, the world actually seemed like it was full of potential. We could be anything. We could do anything.
Looking back, it was also a time food was not an issue. I recall one old man on the street always gave out apples. Our friends would turn their noses at such a thing, preferring candy, and typically toss them back into his yard. We'ld always go the next day and he let us keep what we picked up.

For me it's all about the fun of it. I'm the same way with Christmas, though to a lesser extend. hat I love about it is that it's one of the few times of year when you can go all out and nobody minds. In some cases it's even expected.
I love dressing up for the big night and I really enjoy decorating. Now that I've started building props in earnest, I'm also finding it to be an excellent creative outlet and I enjoy the mental exercise.
And let's not forget the reactions to the TOTs and other visitors. I get this big grin when I hear somebody coment on my decorations, or even better when they compare to what they saw here last year. It makes it all worth it!
And last but not least, it gives me open license to play with my otherwise nonexistent dark side a bit. }

Because I'm really really morbid and have a twisted sense of humor.

Also because it's right before my birthday, because it was a magical night where you could be whatever you wanted and people GAVE you candy and you were allowed out late at night and it's really fun to be scared.
There's no "wrong" way to celebrate Halloween - it is less formal and so much more fun than any other holiday out there for me.I'm a Halloween Bride! 10/31/2002

Its an opportunity to wear a mask, to be someone else, to act out a role you've always wanted to but never had the courage to. Always wanted to wear something see-through but never dared? Now's your chance. In a costume, behind a mask, even the most shy person is able to initiate conversations... or more. Its role playing. Its the chance for an ISFP to be an ENTJ. And, its a hell of an excuse to throw one hell of a party!

I don't really have an answer other than I've always loved anything dark and creepy. I was never one of those rainbow sparkly type girls. I'd rather have black cats and skeletons any day. Who knows why?

It's a night that adults and kids alike can dress up & escape reality for a night.
Like LV Scott said.....it makes one hell of a party. People in costume seem to relax & be a little more daring. Ever see a bunch of 30 somethings playing air guitar?

It's really my mom's fault. She dressed me up as a ghoul when I was 4 and from then on it was my day.
Also, I am really a bit evil so it fits.
Purely and simply evil
