I don't know if it's just me but the halloween decorations when I was a child was very interesting. I know now we have a lot of electric decorations but people did a lot of work to make their house look creepy. Now I look around and a lot of the houses look similiar. Not sure if it's me or not but I had so many great memories when I was a child.
I remember this ghost, you tap it or clap your hands and it makes this boo sound, after awhile it got a bit annoying, but all the kids loved it when it was on our front porch.
This one house on our lot was creepy, this guy would come running out with a chainsaw each time you walked up the driveway. So many kids were outside trick or treating. Now I hardly see any kids trick or treating... but I guess it's cause I live in the wrong town.
I'll always love halloween but nothing will ever compare to my halloween the year of 1993. Thats the year Hocus Pocus came out, I went to a lot of haunted attractions and that year I came home with 2 big bag fulls of candy. I went to this big development and I was trick or treating and everyone still had their lights till late at night. I'll always cherish this memory.
Does anyone hold a special memory close to them on halloween?

I started TOTing around the late '50s. When we would TOT, we would go out early and stay out late, going to different neighborhoods. No curfews. No parents along except for the very little ones. Comercial costumes, when we had them, were limited in selection and very cheap quality with frontal plastic masks and an ultra thin elastic or rubber string around the back held in place with staples, but we loved them. And we didn't use small jack-o'-lantern or skeleton buckets to collect candy. We used large paper grocery bags, and we would fill them! The bag would often be falling apart by the time we got home.
Sadly, there are too many sickos out there to TOT like that now.

I remember "back in the day" when we used to eat the souls of the living. Good times... good times...

I remember the store-bought costumes that had the crappy paper apron and plastic mask with the eyeholes. I remember going ToT without parents when I was 6 or 7 years old, and that not being a problem. We didn't worry about homemade candy and goodies either, because every neighbor in my area was a long-time resident and I'd grown up around them. (it helped that I was living in a small town)
I remember also making my last Halloween costume that I ToT-ed in. It was a mouse, and I used paper plates for ears and a large white garbage sack that I stuffed with newspaper. I was so proud of myself for making it - but I bet the neighbors thought I was a bag of garbage for Halloween!

WOW let me start off by saying great thread around this time of year I am always reminded of my trick or treating days as a youngster.
My TOT'n days fall back to about the some where in the 80's to about the late 90's (yes we didn't care we went TOT'n tell about 17yrs of age) and I can remember the costumes...first thought that comes to mind. I remember the Ninja Turtle costumes with the shells that would tie around your waist - we bought the full accessories (swords, etc) and had a fun time, I think we dresssed up as ninja turles two years in a row and the second year instead of the cheap plastic masks we purchased the more expensive/real looking rubber masks. I also remember dressing up as Freddy and loosing out on the mask I wanted (someone bought it, it was fairly expensive and I was eventually getting it) and being really sad but the Halloween turned out good I had my Freddy shirt, glove and a FAIRLY NICE substitute mask I ended up finding.....I cannot really remember what other costumes I wore ...but as I type I can now remember some vaguely...Jason...bloody hockey player....hmm I NEED TO THINK HARDER.
The other memories of Halloween (October in general) puttin gup an insane amount of window decorations (sometimes way over doing it but we didn't care) and having one of the best decorated houses amongst our peers, the amazing hanted yards we came across as toddlers, the insane amount of hours we put into trick or treating and having probably the most candy on the block, carving PUMPKINS...
Thanks for the thread I'm sure I'll remember more (too early right now lol).

TOTing in the 70's I don't remember seeing much for decor, or adults dressing up.
I do remember trying to TOT in a blizzard....didn't even wear a costume that year it was so crappy out.

My time was the 80's. I was lucky-I lived in a big suburban neighborhood with lots of kids. Every year I would Trick or Treat with my friend that lived a couple houses up. I don't remember at what age, but eventually we were allowed to go without my dad while still in elementary school. Of course, we would stay out as long as possible, and residential street led to residential street.
One year we had stayed out until all lights were out. We were just HUNTING for signs of life at houses we hadn't hit! Then we saw, one house still had light-an open garage. As we neared it we were saying 'I think they're up', and 'do you think we should go?'
It appeared a couple guys were working in their garage, so onward we marched. Just before we got into the driveway, one of the guys turned and 'RAAHHH!!!'
We screamed (in delight!) at the unexpected scare, and to top the night off as well it was just too cool! We ran towards home laughing all the way.
Thank you garage guy!!!

Haunt to Live ... Live to Haunt

The main contrast i find from when i was a kid to today is how so many adults ruin it for the kids.
When i was a kid everyone was happy to open their door and give out a couple or small treats. But in the neighbourhood i live in now we seem to be one of the only ones that do, i look around on halloween nights and most of the houses are in darkness. They just pretend they're not home.
Hell last year the week before Halloween in our local paper their was a full paged ad feature almost telling kids off for trick-or-treating and advising parents to NOT let their kids do it,
why?
they scare the elderly.
Oh come on, i'm not a mean hearted guy but that's horse crap, little kids aren't trying to scare and attack old people, they just want some treats on the one night of the year that this happens. I know for sure my grandparents wouldn't start to have panic attacks and call the police.

We had a great house where we went every year. The guy had a body that fell from a tree. EVERY year we fell for it. I didn't want to go, but my Mom sucked us in everytime saying, "I'm sure it's not there THIS year". The guy giving out candy was dressed too. Incidentially, I blame my Mom for my love of H'ween!
