Hello
I am from Belgium.
As you probably know, Europe re-discovers Halloween and those last years, there were many Halloween events organized in Belgium. Two years ago, in my little village, we organized a Halloween Night parade enlightened of torches. It was beautiful!
Last year, there was nothing organized, except some children coming at our doors asking for candies.
While reading the local newspaper, I realized that the district where I live does organize nothing for Halloween.
I thus made a search on the Internet in order to know what was organized in other Belgian districts and was not disappointed by what I learned.
Many Halloween events are organized with monsters, witches, wizards... for example, in Mariembourg, people will have the opportunity to travel in the Horror Train ; the Caves of Wonck (Bassenge) organize their Halloween-Crypt Show, and much more.
There are so many events that I don't know which one to choose...
I also thought to organize a Halloween Party for single parents, like I did for Valentine's Day and have to plan a Halloween afternoon party at the school where I work.
If you have ideas to help to improve these parties, I'll be glad to learn them.
See you soon,
Dominique.

Hello and welcome from your dutch neighbor

I did some halloween activities at the school where I worked. We carved pumpkins which went over great since most of the kids had never seen the inside of the pumpkin. Then we roasted the pumpkin seeds and ate them. We also did a game where they had to stick their hand into a bag without looking and guess what it was (really disgusting items)...we did this in sync with a poem that was read. We also baked some goodies during the cooking class to have at the small party with the game.

Hi MsMeeples
Carving pumpkins seems to be an interesting activity since in my class there are children from 3 to 12 years old; with a mentally handicapped child who is only 3, therefore, I cannot cook with them…
But the guessing game you talk about seems to be a good idea because all the children will like it.
BTW Nice to meet a neighbour. A great part of my family lives at the Belgo/Dutch border (between Visé and Maastricht).

Halloween in Scotland is still mainly for the children....the adults dress in sexy costumes more at New Year. When I was little, we really did have to sing a song or say a poem for a treat, not like today when they grab at the candies!! Online pumpkin carving is fun!!

Beautycastvixen, you talk about children costumes...
I asked the children what are the Halloween costumes they would like to dress on October 31st. There is only one costume they want to dress: Scream's murderer costume!
Hope that my +40 years old friends will have other kind of costume ideas. Oh yes, I saw lots of adults disguised for halloween; that must be nostalgia because here, we had only carnival to be disguised.

I guess I would like my boys to be innocent for a few more years, enjoy their childhood....but sorry if I am off on a tangent here, their father lets them watch Conair and Scarface. Out of my control as we are divorced. I have to deal with my 8 year old being afraid to take a shower for the memory of Scarface. That is sick!! They seemed to jump from Sesame Street to this real fast!! So of course this year they want to be Leatherface complete with the chain saw.....

My son jumped from Teletubbies to... Scream quicker than he learned to talk!
Since he is 12 years old, he would like to watch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre; I told him to watch mangas and that he'll watch any movie he want when he will be 18 or... 20 or 25 ;-)
Unfortunately the society learns to them that violence and horror are normal things and not only in movies but also while watching the tv news...
Fortunately for my son, his father and him did not met since 8 years so, my son watches only what I accept he whatches, it easier for me than for you.

Anything going on near Maastricht? –
10-28-2007,06:23 AM
Hello,
I am new to the forums and found this particular thread doing a google search.
I am new to Belgium (live on the border to Eijsden) and have a 2 year old son.
I would love to know anything that is going on here for children. Dominique, have you got any ideas? I've been to the caves in Bassenge for an Xmas market and found them totally claustrophobic, that don't want to return. I saw a concert advertised in Eben-Emael, but it didn't seem appropriate for a 2 year old!
Cheers,
N
