How long do you want it (the bubbling and mist) to last? How small is this cauldron (1 gallon, 1 pint)?

Depending on where you get it, and how long you want it to be doing-what-it-does-best, and how big the space is... consider roughly 5 pounds as a starting point.
    Wait... Did you hear that?

You don't need very much to get alot of fog out of it (about the size of a small cell phone), but just a warning.... if you want to use dry ice all night, you will have to constanly keep adding it to the water (it will become a pain in the azz). It's not good solution for a "works all night long" type of thing.

If you want it to go all night, I would suggest using either a fog machine with a chiller, or use an ultrasonic mist maker.

I'd say dry ice last about an hour if you have a small piece. At my work we sell it by the pound. It can get pretty expesnive. You could try those mist makers they have at wal-mart or big lots and place it in your couldron.

Not even close to an hour.

Example.... a chunk the size of a ice pack (the kind you would put in a lunch bag/cooler), would give you about 10 minutes of for production... more or less.

My friend is a dj that does wedding, and he uses dry ice for the first dance. He uses about 5 lbs of dry ice for a 5 minute dance. Of course the volume of fog that he is getting is alot, but even using smaller peices of dry ice in a smaller prop, I'd be surprised if it lasted longer than 30 minutes.

For my cauldron I used a small cooler with a cheap fogger.I piped it in thru a chunk of pvc. With glow sticks in cauldron and cooled fog it looked pretty darn good.

Oh also Dry Ice really sucks to use now that they have all these cool foggers and misters out. Why not just buy one of them for $20.00. You can use it year after year and its alot less expesnive then dry ice.

Did you use glow sticks? They have a ton at the dollar store, that would be really cool to try.
