Hi,
my name is Hagen and I am German. My wife is american and we work on a US Arir Force Base in Germany.
We are both very much into Halloween but compared to the states it’s a big difference here in Germany. Halloween is just becoming bigger and bigger in Germany but still far behind from what you guys do. Home hunts almost unknown in Germany. You may find a pumpkin or a sugar beet with a simple face cut out at peoples door step and some lights but, that’s it for the most.
Most Germans don’t really know what to do if kids show up and call “Suesses oder Saures” which means “Trick or Treat” in German. The ancient celtic tradition of Halloween got almost forgotten in Germany. Maybe it’s unpopular to deal with your ancient past sine it was used in the past by the wrong people – who knows. When I was a kid, I always carved out a sugar beet made a scary face and put a candle in it. Why I didn’t really know my parents told me it’s a tradition to scare bad spirits away.
There is a small group of Halloween enthusiasts in Germany who do home haunting, including me ;-) Here in Germany we use mostly static props since animatronic props are just becoming popular. Most props are homemade. Commercial props are extreamly expensive. For example “Crazy Spazm” is about 220 Euro which is about 280 bucks. Lucky me I bought mine for 90$ ;-) It will take us a couple of years to catch up with you guys, but we are trying. Not for the competition, just for the morbid fun of Halloween:
Dark greetings from Germany and excuse my English but it’s not my native language.
Hagen

Willkommen Werwolf, just do what you can, and believe me, others will follow in time. I know that many people who don't really appreciate halloween still enjoy looking at what others put up in their yards during the season. Then....it spreads....and others do it too
Post yours pics with us and we'll share ideas too. You've come to the right place!

Hello Werwolf.
As you have probly figured out long ago, America is a mix of everything, but hopefully our way of celebrating Halloween will become as big in Germany as Oktoberfest is becoming here."I never drink....wine. Well maybe just this once!"
