Vent ahead;
Not only were they the last store to get their Halloween stuff out but they don't even have the castle wall scenesetter which I was desperately waiting for. They only had the skeleton and graveyard ones.
I'm on a limited budget and can't afford the shipping from the states. Any ideas on how to create a similar effect with limited time and funds?

Hmm.... you have a Spirit around you?
I was looking for two packages of the castle scene setters and they're going for 19.99 everywhere except Spirit Halloween which had them for 16.99 + I had a 20% coupon.
One thing I am doing in the room with the castle walls is making a door for an open archway to the kitchen. I'm taking a brown sheet (probably a twin), cutting to size and either using one of those huge sharpes (big big fat ones), or some paint and 'making' wood grain.
You could get a gray sheet and do the same. I pick up several sheets (black to block off rooms, etc) at Wal Mart for $1 or 2.

I've been seeing Scene Setters all over the place in Calgary. There's a "Dollar World" (not sure if it's a chain or not), that had a solid wall of them. I think even WalMart might have had them.

Build a castle. Sorry its just a thought. I know what your saying. Spencers is always way too overpriced. I would always shop after Halloween to get great prices. They had a water globe. You know the ones with the scene with water in it. It was the coolest I've ever had. It had a haunted house scene and a little fan inside. When you turn it on the fan would stir up the bats in the water and they would fly around the house. It was cool I had it for years. The water got so cloudy you could not see the scene. So I took it apart to try and fix it. I talked to a guy who sold those type things. He said that it probably did not have distilled water and started to grow nastys in the water. I lost most of the parts due to procrastination (sorry about the spelling,lol) and finally had to throw it away. Like grandma said if you don't do it while your thinking about it you won't get it done. They wanted $40 for that thing. But after Halloween $15 . i had many years with it and never seen another like it. Ah.. Memories......
"Every night will be another evil scene, like a horror dream, I want, I command you to sceam. Halloween you are my pride. Halloween not just a dream."

I wish I lived in Calgary lol. Walmart has nothing and neither does Michael's. Those were the two big ones. My only other options were Zellers, CT and Spencers but they aren't pulling through for me either.
That's what I get for living in Thunder Bay. Lack of choice and ridiculous shipping prices.

can you find rolls of newsprint paper ? either at craft stores or ask a local printing compagny place , my husband works as an imprinter and they have rolls of alot of type of paper .....newsprint is usually cheap , it is used to pack boxes....if so , then get rectangle sponges or cut foam pieces like large bricks or cement block , paint your background black and sponge some grey paint like your building a wall on the paper ? you can play with 2 types of grey or grey and some white....you can even paint with a stencil some vines going up on it ....
just an idea if you have time to make it yourself of course

Black plastic on your walls does the trick, too.
Buycostumes.com shows shipping to Canada for 8.99 when I added 2 scene setters to the cart. Why is that too expensive? (cheaper than gas!)
