This just crossed my mind as I need to call myself.
Were I live all my ulities are underground, gas, water, electric, phone and cable.
Phone and cable are buried very low belive it or not.
Anyways if ur driving stacks and such into the ground, take note.
This is a free service, look on the back of a ulity bill, usaully mentioned like "Call before u dig". They will come out and flagged where ur ulitilies run threw ur yard...for free.
Heres the thing, say ur driving a pice of rebar into the ground for a fence or tombstone, and break a cable line......You are now responiably to pay for the cost of repairing it if u didnt call. But if U call first....1. u know where they are and 2. if they mis-takenly mis mark, the ulitily company is responsable for the repair.
Just a added tip for some, takes only 3 minutes to call and its free.

That's an excellent and very important tip. We are planning on driving some stakes into the ground and will definitely make that call.

Very good tip! Here in Illinois it is called "JULIE: The Illinois One-Call System".
There is a national campaign and a national "call before you dig" number has been created in the U.S. The number is 811 so if you live in the U.S. you can call this number to have your underground utility lines marked.Zombie Eradication/Disposal Unit (ZEDU) - K-9 Patrol Division

GREAT tip ScareShack! I'm putting up a full-scale fence for the first time this year, so I have to drive a LOT of rebar pieces 12" or so in the ground around the cemetery. I've had all the utilities marked; it took a few phone calls to follow up and make sure it all got done though. In Texas, the agency(ies) to call are: Lone Star Notification 1-800-669-8344, DigTess 1-800-344-8377, Texas 1 Call 1-800-245-4545. Each of these agencies are "supposed" to fax your request to the other 2, so that all of the utilities are notified, but that didn't happen in my case, hence the multiple follow-up calls...
I'm making a scale drawing on graph paper of my yard so that I can chart where the lines are for future use in landscaping, Xmas decorations, etc. My DH has a laser distance measuring tool that's really coming in handy for that!!!Gothikim

That is a good idea. The phone company decided to run the phone line right through my yard instead of on the easement rights. If I have it sprayed and the phone line isn't marked and I hit a line, oops, their bad.

Yeah, very good idea. I did it a few years ago when we started really getting into the Halloween decorating spirit, so every year I already know where *not* to dig or stake.
