For those who have a haunt at home do you just provide a spooky atmosphere or do you also attempt to startle people? If so, how do you do it?

Mines more upfront raw intimidation these days. I will follow and make older kids squirm though.

The whole "I ain't going in THERE" reaction.
So kids wind up coming in bunches, huddled together, or clinging to the parents.
I don't hide in the shadows, everything is well lit by comparison to other yard haunts. Nothing jumps out. Just the stuff out, with me there.

A little of both actually, I set a spooky atmosphere and I let the smaller TOT's go through without triggering the props.. the older ones I try to startle. All my props have to be manually triggered, yeah its a bummer but Im working on it lol anyway that lets me choose who I 'startle' and who I dont

Example: I have a creepy pond w/ a skull fountain, spanish moss, fog and a large lizard. The younger TOT's just walk by , the older ones get a 'spit' from the lizard

This might sound sick and sadistic, but scaring a ToT half to death is one of the best feelings I could have.
