Do any of you live where the mayor actually dares to declare when trick or treat will take place? As if an elected official had any power over Halloween!
I've never known any kids to stick to the schedule. The few we see come on Halloween night, not on the previous Saturday or what have you. Every year the city tries to determine when the kids will go out, and every year the kids go out when they are supposed to, the 31st.

Our city will stick to the 31st..... unless it falls on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. I can't ever remember TOTing or handing out candy on a weekend here!

Our township supervisors (elected) determine TOT. It has always been 6-8PM on October 31st UNLESS the 31st falls on a Friday (high school football) or a Sunday. NO ONE has ever knocked on my door outside of the designated time. You can watch all the porch lights go OFF exactly at 8PM.
Now that I think about it, THAT'S kinda scary!

'round here, Friday: High school football, Sunday: religious reasons. I imagine Saturday is usually a party night for many people and not only would TOT disrupt adult parties, but there'd be an increase in the number of DUI drivers on the roads. Saturday nights also probably have a higher incidence of vandalism and other mischief.
Just my best guess.

We've been 6-8 p.m. on the 31st for many years, regardless of the day of week. I remember one year (23 yrs ago) where they elected to have TOT from 2-4 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon. It was horrible! Even the kids were depressed! THe next year they reverted back to evening hours. Things pretty much shut down after 8 p.m. but I leave my display/haunt up until about 11 as we always have a bunch of people come over later on to visit and check things out. I'd hand out candy until 10 if the kids kept coming.

Where I live, the "official" TOT time is set by the city council for 5-8, but of course teenagers come around after 8 looking for whatever is left. I've only lived here for about 4 years, but the only time I know of the town declaring the day for TOT was when it fail on a Sunday and they moved TOT to Monday for religious reasons.

People are estatic when Halloween happens to fall on a weekend here. Our city's highschools don't have football teams any more (this is Canada, eh?), so Friday night trick or treating is the best! There are no designated times either.

Holy crap! I feel so lucky. I can't imagine the curfews and date restrictions
Halloween is when it is. Hopefully you folks who are restricted can take other measures (ie...haunts or parties) to make up for the people in power who just don't seem to get it.
