Front window display goes up this weekend, for starters.
I don't want to just scare them... I want to mess them up for life!

The interior gets the works the last weekend of September. The porch gets done the weekend before Halloween. I don't get many TOTers, and both of us are gone during the workday.

Hubby and I wait until about two weeks before Oct 31. Even then, we only put out a few things at a time...building up and building up to the big day when we put out our really big/great stuff.

Firstly, we don't want to put it all out at once. We find feeding the curiosity seekers sparsely keeps them hungry and coming back for more and secondly, it helps avoid theft/vandalism (luckily, thats not been a problem yet). And thirdly, we like the WOW expressions we see on folks faces and the increase of car traffic slowing down passing our house to check almost daily for updates. We love it.

I'll start on October 1 and add something every day. I live in a very walkable neighborhood so a lot of people stop by to check on the progress all month. Plus there's a school bus stop in front of the house so the kids from several neighborhoods come by regularly as well. October 1 will probably be just a few pumpkins on the front steps.

In the past, I'd always put the interior display (including TOT treats) up about a week or so in advance of The Day. The big outdoor stuff would be staged outdoors a day or so ahead. The outdoor stuff would actually be set up the day of TOT...which often meant working every minute between 5AM and TOT time.

This year, I will be trying a new tack. Here's the plan:

Any outdoor items that can safely be placed outside will go out as early as possible.

First week in October for front door display, outdoor webbing, non-walk-away items like corn stalks, simple bows, 'flying lines'...etc. TOT treats will be counted out and assorted into their shelves and display containers.

All the outdoor string lights will go up the second week along with window silhouettes, and all indoor decor. I'll also assemble all the small outdoor props making sure batteries are fresh.

A week before: indoor video display set-ups (window silhouettes, Big Scream TV, ghost projectors, etc. will be sighted in and in place.

Three days before: the big outdoor stuff will be staged outdoors under tarps - along with all the AC cords to power everything.

Two days before: All the camouflage material staged, along with the rest of outdoor lighting. Indoor TOT area ready to go!

The day before:Set up flying gags. Cemmie stones out, but lying face down.

THE DAY: Everything outdoors set up.

Of course, this is just a rough plan. I'll work out the details over the next week or so.
