I did put a clear coat of stain on it. I wanted to keep the wood look, since that is how they looked back then, but I didn't want it to rot either. I like it so much, I've considered keeping it as a coffee table. =) But I don't think hubby will go for that.

WOW!! Nice job! I love the handles too. (I guess I need to add some now too since it really would make it a heckuva lot easier to move!!)
My suggestion is to either spring for a Bucky skel from ACC or buy a really nice mask, a styrofoam wig form, and some old clothes from Goodwill. You can stuff 'em with plastic bags or whatever you've got lying around and make a nice dead guy. If you can find one, I think Morbid Industries makes a really cool looking foam-filled latex dead guy...
