We are going to need lots of lanterns this year - hanging from the ceiling, attached to the walls, & sitting on shelves. I got a bunch of old, discontinued chandeliers from Lowes and took the arms off to make wall sconces (with flicker bulbs), and we can use mason jars with votives for the shelves, but we wanted some nice lanterns to hang.

My wife came back from Smiths (grocery store) with nice aged, "rust" & glass lanterns for $5 each. They were in the "summer" aisle. Other stores (Ralphs, Krogers, etc) may have them as well.

This is what I use for lights along the driveway for my Halloween party.
I hang them from trees along both sides of it.

Just unscrewed the lid & took out the middle seal. Wrapped a single strand of medium weight wire around the neck of the jar & twisted the end around the long wire. With a needle nose plyers I bent the long length into a hoop. After you have a big enough hoop, cut the wire & wrap around. Then I just screwed the outside lid on to secure the wire. I tied thick kite string to the hoop to hang it at the proper height. If you want to leave the lanterns up for a while, just unscrew the ring & add the middle seal. It helps put out the tea candle & to keep debris out. I use those long neck push button fire starters to light the tea candles.

Very clever! Thanks for the tip. I believe that solves my hanging lantern problem, since I have 2 cases of large Mason jars.
