I was thinking of using something like this to illuminate a single prop.
Thought no cord would be good , portable:

anyone have any experince with this unit?
how long can it run constant on batteries?
any other ideas for a small portable black light?

    thanks

We have a couple of those, don't expect too much from them, but it will work. I used it one year to light up a photo frame and it lasted all night.

You can buy them pretty much at any store like Wal-Mart, so maybe buy one and try it out to see what you think.

We bought one to detect pet stains when house shopping. It does work pretty well for that.

There are some threads here about portable setups.

I picked up one of these at Target. They are $2.50 each and they are in the bins at the front of the store when you first walk in. There are also $2.50 LED strobe lights, tiny mirror balls, and tiny blue rotating beacons. The output of the black lights is pretty amazing for the size.

I was in Target recently, and they had battery-operated black lights that were about 6 inches long for around $2.50 in the front of the store. A couple of those might be good for a small prop.

I hesitated, and when I went back, they were sold out. So I'm looking at other Targets in the area to see if they still have it somewhere.

I'll have to check my Target stores!

You can also build battery operated UV LED spots, if you are so inclined. A how-to for building an LED spot, including somepictures comparing black light to a UV LED spot can be found here.

I used the portable blacklights carried by walmart on a haunted trail a few years back. used them for lighting up directional signs in the really dark spots. Worked ok for me and the batteries lasted a couple of nights
