Do any of you put strings of Halloween lights outside your house, similar to what people do at Christmas. I’m not talking about lighting your haunt, I mean lights that you leave up outside the house and turn on at night. Mr L and I want to do this but all we can find are the usual orange and purple light strings. We’ve seen a lot of scary looking lights, skeletons, heads, eyeballs, etc. but they are only for indoor use. We’d love to have skeleton lights hanging from the eves of the house for the month of October!

We put up strings of the purple lightes in a couple of our front yard ornamental trees and along some bushes. We also have purple icicle lights we hang on some of our gutters. We do this in early October as kind of a prelude of things to come since we don't put out the main outside decor until very close to Halloween.
It's really not "cutesy" and gives a nice ambience to the yard on Halloween.

Yes indeed we use lights. In fact thats how our decorating started out.

We have orange net lights along the driveway on the eight arborvitae. There are also orange net lights on the burning bushes near the house. I have purple net lights thrown over the junipers along the driveway wall. My spooky iron gate with the skelly was too dark to be seen at night so I strung some small orange lights on it and it shows up nicely.

Then I have a string of purple lights so dark they almost look black and rather than just have them sit in a box I wind them through the giant spider rope web between the trees. Its just enough light so that someone will not walk through it at night.

Check out my photos below, 2005 I has more pictures of the lights, 2006 has just one photo of the lights in the web.

On the inside I use orange & purple icicle lights too. I know some people dont like it but I do and thats what matters

Actually it really does brighten up the yard and the kids like it too.

Heck yeah. If they were as cheap as xmas lights, I'd do more. I use orange lights on my fence, some flickering lights marking the entrance, and on the back patio I use a lot of lights... around the canopies up to the top, spiderwebs on windows. flickering chandaliers, and the graveyard has colored spots and blacklights.

Among other things. This year I'm adding lighted trees to the graveyard and some other stuff.

We go way out for xmas, so ultimately I'd say I like lights about as much as anything.

Lights are a must! Keep in mind, you need some light to show off whatever work you have done too, since it will be best appreciated in the dark. I have those skeleton and other indoor lights, and I use them outside. Since you are in Florida, you don't have to worry about the cold. I live on the west coast, and our falls are constant wind and rain. The skellies mostly survive, although, now and again, one will lose an arm or leg...makes it look more interesting if you ask me (that is until my tiny niece asks..."what happened to that one's leg?????")

Yes, I use lights, I have some of the bigger lights, like the old fashioned x-mas lights, that are black/dark purple. They look good. I also have orange ones like that , that I use on occasion. I also have the small twinkle lights in orange and black. Some years I use them all, some years a few, depending on my whim. I got most of them after haloween on clearence.
I have flying monkeys- and I'm not afraid to use them!

I buy my lights at deep clearance after Halloween. Last year, I bought 38 boxes of orange, green, and purple lights at Walgreen's for just 67 cents a box! And they were the larger indoor/outdoor mega-brights! I already had quite a few orange twinkle light strings...but never put them on before The Day. We are a little too far off the beaten path for pre-TOT lights to be seen by anyone other than one neighbor and a few itinerant raccoons.

Usually, I put everything up (and down) within 72 hours of TOT...but this year, I think I will set out all my string lights a week or so in advance. That way, I'll be able to tweak the lighting and get a better idea of the general yard layout. Plus, with the new DST, half of TOT will be in daylight. So it'll be more of a challenge than usual to strike a good balance.

We've been using lights for years. Our house is on a very heavily travelled road, so the easier our decorations are (i.e. the harder they are to steal) the better. We have purple lights that line the top of our house, they have that black light look to them. In our bushes we have orange and yellow lights mixed with huge spider web lights. A "Happy Halloween" light banner is across the driveway and then we have our huge spooky light up trees and few other items here and there. We definitely plan on adding some new things this year and change the look a bit.

Target typically a great assortment of different styled lights. Everything from pumpkins to bats to bones....we purchased the pumpkin ones last year. They typically also have a great selection of other outdoor oriented decorations, like my aforementioned spooky trees.

I've had the best luck finding my lights at of all places, Target. If you can hit them as soon as they put their Halloween items out, you obviously get the best selection and they hit the shelves at a great price too. In my area, to try and wait to get a good deal on anything Halloween related means you'll be out of luck and the store will be out of stock.
I came here to chew bubble gum and kick ass. I'm all out of bubble gum.

I've used purple lights to outline a tree in the front yard (like people do at christmas time). Turned out pretty good.

As far as an entire string of outdoor skellie lights....I've never seen anything like that. But I suppose you could string the shorter sets together and used them along a covered porch or something.

Don't forget, you can often take the 'indoor only' variety and transfer the molded decorative coverings to the indoor/outdoor lights.
