I don't know about you guys, but I always find I don't have enough sound sources for my haunt. I was recently emailed a deal from buy.com for a sandisk 512MB MP3 player for only $14.99. I have received my first one, and despite the fact that it's a refurb and had no documentation, it works great and will hold way more than I'll need on Halloween night. I plan to buy a few more and use them in different locations with different sounds. I'll just plug them into some amplified speakers and go.
So anyway, these are cheap and should certainly come in handy. If you search the site, you won't see them, but they are at the following link if you're interested:

They also have a 1GB sansa player for around $30 if you need more storage.

Most powered speakers would work. You could use sets like you'd use with your PC, or the ipod units might work. It really depends on how the connection is made. The Sansa has a 1/8" stereo mini phone jack just like the ipods, but it's placement is different. If the sounds you're using don't need bass (crickets, bats, etc) I'm sure cheap computer speakers would work. If you need the thump, you'd need a set with a subwoofer or you could use a good boombox with an auxiliary input.

thanks, i feel kind of stupid. I never thought of just plugging the speaker wire into the headphone jack. <blushing>

Well, you wouldn't plug the SPEAKER wire into the headphone jack. You essentially have audio at or near line level coming out of the headphone jack (depending on what your volume level is out of the player). You need to raise that to speaker level and you'd usually use an amplifier to do that. The little computer speakers and ipod speakers have small amplifiers built in. Hope that makes sense. If not, feel free to ask questions. I'd be happy to help. Just not knowing something doesn't make you "stupid".

OK, i didn't mean bare speaker wire, I meant speaker jack connection...you know the little silver thing you plug into the back of the computer to make the speakers work. Is that what you're referring to? I can do a lot of things, but electronics isn't my strong suit. you can PM me or email directly if you think I need that much more help

I got my MP3 Player today. Not much to it. Not even sure it weighs 6 ounces. Getting ready to load some music in it now.

Yes, you want to use the small plug that's on a set of computer speakers.
