I know I've had a link, but now I've lost it.

Somewhere out there, someone was making infrasound (sound frequencies below human detection) CD's for use in haunts. Google is being of little help and only bringing up a band named infrasound and some scientific tests on the effects of infrasound.

Anyone else remember this at all, or perhaps have the link?

I'm pretty sure Hauntmasterproducts.com sells a CD like that, but in going to the web site to double check it says the site is closed until Aug. 20th due to health problems of the owner. I do recall seeing something like that for sale, though.

You don't really need the CD, just do a search on infrasound and find the frequencies that you want according to the results that those frequencies bring.

In about 5 min I found a Tone Generator that I could download for free (http://www.nch.com.au/tonegen/index.html).

With it, I can create a wave file of a tone at any frequency.

After reading up a bit on infrasound, I found a consensis that a 19hz tone, just below the human hearing threshold, produces irrational fear in those that "hear" it. You would have to experiment with the volume level, and be sure you have speakers that are capable of reproducing frequencies that low.

I imagine a decible meter would tell you if anything was coming out of your speakers and at what level, even though you would not be able to hear it.

I did create a 5 minute long wav file of the 19hz tone which you can download HERE to experiment with. I would be interested in hearing results.

Right click on the link, then select "Save Target As" from the menu. Once saved on your hard drive burn it on an audio disc and play it on a CD player through a decent sub woofer and see what happens.

From what I read, you should be careful of your volume levels. Since you can't hear it, it is hard to tell how loud it is and whether it is damaging your eardrum.

    Hey, thanks.

My brother's looking at adding this to a project of his. I'll try to get a recording of the finished product.

He's building a pitch black room with nothing but sound bombardment from every conceivable direction as a room in a haunt to advertise his business. http://www.musicvillageusa.com/ So, getting the right speakers and equipment should present no problems.

Thanks HalloweenBob for the link. I think it would be difficult to find speakers that can do 19hz. Most really good ones I know of spec out at 20hz. I wonder how well they reproduce lower stuff. Anything other than studio-reference quality won't even come close to that, usually 40-60hz max on the low end for most home systems.

Interesting post. It's got me thinking.
