I can tell you what NOT to get-cheap LED lights and rechargeable batteries. I always use rechargeable batteries but I think they were not enough to keep my lights on, as last year I was changing batteries every couple hours and of course on Halloween I was bitterly changing batteries after coming in from TOTing to find an unlit Jack.
I am so happy you started this thread!

Dminor~
Those are very cool but you are right about the price.
Maybe if I buy one now and then spread it out over the weeks it will be easier to deal with. But then I have the increase in shipping cost.
Cool candles though.A short drop and a sudden stop.

I spent a lot of time last year messing around with LED flicker, for you DIYs you might check out http://http://www.johnnyspage.com/LED%20Flicker.htm The page includes videos of several flicker options, including a real candle to compare to. Sorry, the page is currently a little disorganized.
Be sure to see Otaku's tea light hack that links off the above page. Personally my favorite is the result you get hacking the cheapo LED tealights with AA batterys and an Ultra Bright LED. They now have Ultra Bright LEDs with a wide viewing angle, I will have to try those this year.heresjohnny

It looks like the LED candles from thinkgeek are a little cheaper:

And they're "blow-on, blow-off"... though probably not as realistic. I'm tempted to buy a couple from each source and compare.

I think those look pretty good, Dminor. It's always hard to tell on video, though. My complaint is that most of these LED candles have too much flickering. Candles just don't flicker constantly. I think even the cheapies will work well inside a prop or in the background where they aren't the focal point.
I still have a soft spot in my heart for the old flicker bulbs that look like orange candle flames.

We bought these for use during hurricane season....and yeap, they've become part of our Halloween decorations as well. I found a pair last year at a local home decor store of all places. Ours came in a set of four different sizes and they are actually fairly realistic looking...the best part is they have an 8 hour lifespan...so they are good for not only Halloween, but they do provide us light when hurricanes knock out the power.
I came here to chew bubble gum and kick ass. I'm all out of bubble gum.
Laurie: "Was that the boogeyman?"
Dr. Loomis: "As a matter of fact...that was."
