has anyone seen these and what are they?
I was at Best Buy the other day, and I saw a lot of dvd's with in the top right hand corner a skull with the word masters of horror. Some of the titles are Jenifer with Steven Weber, Family which looked pretty good with George Wendt, a new release called Black Cat, what are these? They are not expensive but I dont want to buy them. If they are anything like Horrorfest that came out on dvd in March those are pretty bad except for maybe 2 of them.

They are films shown on Showtime. Check out the site:

"Jenifer" is based on a Berni Wrightson/Bruce Jones story from the old Warren Publishing Co's "Creepy" magazine.

The only version of Jenifer I own is in a mint copy of Berni Wrightson: Master of the Macabre comic book issue #1... I was not aware it had been published previously in Creepy, but of course it makes sense. Complete DUH moment for me.
A heck of a story, though, and made an impact on me when I first encountered it way back in the early 80's. I've seen the DVD at my local Wally World and wondered about it but have yet to consider buying it... I don't want anything to sully the idea of one of my favorite short-short horror stories ever.
Horror comic books, high school dances, horror movie festivals over odd weekends away from school... eh, those were the days.

I have rented them all (I think) at Netflix and some are Ok and some are not so great and some are really bad. Depends what you like I guess. The one called "Jenifer" with Steven Weber is directed by Dario Argento and is over the top and laughable and I actually kind of liked it for those reasons. "Family" is directed by John Landis and is pretty good until the ending.

We own several of the Masters of Horror series. They are so much better than the Horrorfest films (I was very disappointed in Horrorfest). To me, they are similar to Tales From the Darkside but more updated and thought provoking. In fact, my avatar is from the cover of Jennifer. Here’s our review of them:
Really good: Jennifer, taken seriously a very disturbing story
Cigarette Burns, creepy and suspenseful, our favorite
Incident on and off A Mountain Road, overall good story
Pretty good: Chocolate, an ok story
Dream in the Witch House, a haunted house tale
Sick Girl, a creepy bug story
Didn’t like: Deer Woman, too cheesy
Dance of the Dead, too predictable"Look what your brother did to the door!" Original TCM

Hey Mike, I sold off most of my 70s-era Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella - except ones that had Wrightson artwork, starting with his atmospheric splash pages inside the front cover and culminating with some classic stories of horror.

I've pretty much given up on this series. Sure, a few of them are decent, but I prefer a longer format. I also hate how they're milking the DVDs by putting only one episode on each disc. If they made it like every other series and had 3-5 episodes per disc, they'd be worth a rental because you could choose to skip over the bad ones. I also feel like they've run out of true horror "Masters" and will soon rename the show "Horror Apprentices".
