While I do get "startled" from time to time, I enjoy nothing more than walking around my haunt at Night when everything is running, while enjoying my hard work i seem to get a nice calming from it.

I do get freaked out time to time. We usually have a life size prop next to the front door, but off to the side. So when I step out to get the morning paper it gets me pretty good, if not on the way out, he gets me when I turn around.

Afraid of your own Haunt? Nonsense. I was "afraid" one year that 50 Live Rats would somehow escape and be running free inside the house. And "afraid" of somebody getting trampled running down the corridor to the exit.

But, like others have posted, I DID give myself a major start one year-
We had a Sweeney Todd's Barber Shoppe in our Haunt that year. We needed a realistic Human Head for the decapitation scene. I happened across a make-up and SP/FX guy in Vancouver who had the authentic latex head of David Warner from the film version of "The Omen". It was worth $4,000.oo, but he let me use it, great guy. I picked it up after work a few days before Hallowe'en and left it on the Fireplace mantle. OK, next morning, I jump out of bed, grab my customary Coffee and Danish, and sit down in the Living Room to watch the Early Morning News. I wasn't ready to see David Warner's silently screaming head sitting on the mantle - coffee everywhere, and the head went downstairs right then and there.

I have this realistic dummy that I got from the Idaho Power Company. He weighs 160 pounds and looks real, they used him for training workers to rescue electrocution victims from the poles and wires. When we acquired him, my husband took him by the shoulders and his friend grabbed his legs and they swung him up into our pick-up truck. His arms were swinging, looked just like a dead guy. There were two kids on bikes riding by and I thought they were going to hit a tree when they saw the "dead guy" being loaded into the truck!

Anyway, because he's so heavy, he lays under the pool table in the garage. I KNOW he's there, but every once in a while he still freaks me out because he looks so real.

Last year we did Spyder Manor. Creepy enough with all the spiders but it was the webbing that got me!

I'd walk around a bit and then feel these tendrils caressing my cheek and I was SURE we had real spiders putting up webs where there shouldn't have been any!

Also, we have this 6ft tall motion and sound activated mummy. The eyes light up and move and he mumbles loudly.. "Help me help me.. let me out of here!!". Other times he moans.. freaks me out late at night when I've forgotten to turn him off along with all the other props in the house after everyone else has long gone to bed!

Last year after I packed up the haunt I forgot and left one body standing at the back corner of the house, when I walked out on that in the dark it startled me. The after halloween I had leatherface and many other characters looming around my bed, even a vampire hanging above the bed. Then I started having really strange dreams so most of it went to my band room. Even though you know its there when you wake up in a daze at night it gets you.

I have a night armor that I use for hallowen and when its not halloween its in my room up against the window. Well one night I got home, went into my dark room and noticed the blinds were open ( I hate blinds open at night) so i went to close them. Well little did I know that the night was caught on one of the blinds and when I closed them it moved and made a teriable creaking noise. Scared the crap out of me because I thought the damn thing came allive.

Yes, it's quite funny actually. My friends and I will be working in the garage, hear a sound, then yell "Let's go" as we head to the door, lol.

Interesting that you bring this up.

I have been moving things around down in the basement and I set the two Hell Hound props out on the table(they were in the enclosed storage room before) and it seems that I am creeped out everytime I have to go down there. I turned them around so that their yellow eyes arent facing me as I walk up and down the stairs but now they are "watching" me when I do the laundry.

    Just my opinion,

But I think it is simply human nature to be a little freaked out from time to time at our Halloween creations. It is not real natural to see a blood thirsty creature clmbing out of his fresh grave while screaming... At a young age we are taught what is "normal" to see and what is "scary" to see.

I think it is that pull toward the macabre, toward the mystery and "scary" that pulls certain people towards really enjoying Halloween and what it encompasses. At the same time the pull and what we create is what we have been taught is scary... its no big deal, as long as you walk the line to what you personally see as fun-scary... and not personally disturbing...
