After reading the pumpkin seed planting thread, it made me wonder if most of you carve your own JOL for use in your haunt? Neither Mr. L or I can draw or carve anything that would be decent enough to use so we use a bleeding pumpkin fountain in our haunt.
On a side note, my neurologist (sees me for migraines) was in a charity event last Halloween. The docs had to carve JOLs to win and the money was donated to a charity. My neurologist carved two, one with a scary face that was vomiting (used the pumpkin guts to achieve that effect) and one that looked like it had a lobotomy! They were very disturbing looking things (I saw pics) and I was very impressed with his talent at carving!
So, what do you carve yours to look like? Anyone have pics?

We plan to have a room with a few pumpkins but they may turn out to be the foam kind. They will last longer and also for the fire code subject. No candels.

We carve for the kids only something of a tradition to buy and carve.
No of us have the skill to do anything fancy either.

Jack O'Lanterns? Absolutely!
When I lved in Canada we'd have Jacks in all of the rooms of our walk-thru, for ambient lighting and to set a sort of "tone". They're never "out-of-place" in a Haunted House on Hallowe'en. The scent of a candle burning in a Pumpkin also adds a unique touch.
Down here, the "Pumpkins" are yellow-green and too small for a real Jack O'Lantern. Two years ago the Lions Club started importing pumpkins from Mississippi, where an Architect friend of mine has a farm. The really big ones start to rot before they even reach here, it's a three week sea cruise from Long Beach. But they can't bring enough down to satisfy those that wnat them. They pass them out at schools. It's great to see all these kids lugging home ripe orange pumpkins! This year they're bringing in 2 One Ton Bins.Wolfman

I usually have at least a couple of pumpkins, last year my son and I did a pumpkin masters pattern for the first time, they actually were easier than I would of expected, we did a moderate and a easy, but they both turned out really good for our first time. Mrs Leatherface, I would check the pattern books out when they come out, you might be able to find a pattern that you like, and give it a shot, like I said, it wasn't all that hard. I don't know about a difficult pattern, I may try one this year.
I have flying monkeys- and I'm not afraid to use them!

We used to do them a lot, but they don't really fit into the pirate theme. Unless it's as cargo. This year we planted both pumpkin pie and JOL varieties in the garden. If we have enough we will have the neighborhood kids come over and scratch thier names into their pumpkins. (as the pumpkin grows the name will scar over and grow with it) DANG I love pumpkin pie...
