There is such history around Cassadega , besides what your read historically. LOL !
The Spirtiualist there are very divided about commericalism and things like Halloween.
Many at the camp , have been opposed for years, about inviting Halloween traffic.
My ex-husband is married to a Medium at the camp. They use to hire extra police and actually block off the town a week or so before Halloween and ofcourse that night. About 15 years ago, they tryed to "control" the situation. Instead of paying a "fotune" in trying to keep people away- some decided to go with the flow and "make money" by having a halloween "hayride".
I was involved in setting up his old victorian/ very gothic home( very haunted house looking) exterior and we had about 20 live actors( cemetery, giant spider web with victim, Count Dracula etc.) Other's did the same to their houses and areas. There was about 15 "zones" in all . About 8 of them were REALLY GOOD. It was okay and alot of FUN. But it seemed like the attendees where alot of teenagers ..... We did a week of hayrides. Each might the patrons seem to get increasing more immature and more drunk. I would imagine it wouldn't be much fun for children or adults to have to listen to the crap. I know that part for us "difficult" to deal with. Kids kept challenging everything, trying to jump off the hayride trams and get into the zones, etc.
So Cassadega decided that wasn't such a good idea for their community and didn't do it for a couple of years. The Hotel has gone back to it.(commericalizing) ....and yes it is rather lame.
But you have to understand that this place is for real. And REAL people live there. This is their home and community. The general public has this sense that they are freaks and you will find ghost appearing in every corner . The public can be very rude if they aren't offered up some tremedeous scares or frightful experiences. These people are usually very private people and quiet and shy. Many have regular everyday "jobs" and even their co-workers
don't know they are mediums or live within the camp.
Oh. And the Hotel isn't actually apart of the Camp. But I won't go into that history, because I am not sure of all my facts. LOL .
To live ( own property) in the "camp" you actually have to be certified nationally.
Those that live or own property in Cassadega, but not the "camp" are not certified.
That means you or I could go thier and hang out our Shingle and start calling ourself's
mediums. LOL ! So those people don't add to the validity of the Spiritualist camp.
Real haunting stuff is not as visually or noisy and chainsaw jumping out scary
as what many expect for Halloween haunts. And I would imagine, ( IMHO) that real spirits
( because I haven't spoke to any of my ghosts lately) wouldn't stay around Cassadega during Halloween just to "scare" people that want to have fun.
Cassadega has its own charm and history and is very spooky.....
Some of the residents are very real in their craft. ( Actually certified) but there are the
charlatains (sp) and those are the ones that like to cash in commericalism.
I would suggest if you want some real fun on Halloween night or if you are looking for a good scare - then go to HHN and HOS . they know how to do Halloween right.
Go to Cassadega some other time of the year and enjoy what reality has to offer. It really is a very cool place and can be very creepy.
Today the Pond. Tomorrow The World!
