I know this belongs in the off topic forum, but I wanted it to get some visibility.

We really can't afford it right now, but my wife is about to graduate from grad school and I want to take her as a treat. We have long talked about going...

Any tips on where to stay, what to see and such? Obviously I'm doing my own due diligence, but wanted to compare notes. I'm definitely leaning toward staying on the water near Duvall Street. We will be flying in to avoid a 14 hour drive. Would love to avoid renting a car.

    Thanks!

Can't recommend a hotel, we're usually on a cruise ship when visiting Key West. But when you are there, take a ride on Conch Train. (pronounced conk) It will hit all the highlights. And if you want the real deal when it comes to Key Lime pie, go to the Blonde Giraffe, others are so-so. Then back on Duval, Margaritaville if fun, or down around the corner at the end of Duval is the Hogs Breath Saloon, decent cheesburger. The #1 do not miss is watching the sunset from the pier at the west end of Duval (across the street from hogs breath). Have fun in the Conch Republic...
I don't want to just scare them... I want to mess them up for life!

Haven't been there since '86, but remember a sunken ship museum that was awesome. Anybody know if it is still there?

My wife and I have been there a few times - it's our fav place to go on vacation. We stay right off Duvall at a place called Heron House which is pretty well situated in Old Town but not on the water.

Rent bikes and explore the entire island - easy to get around and lots of fun. Head down to watch the sunset celebration, hit the beaches - and be sure to do the Ghost Tour. Really awesome.

Plenty of great restaurants and bars on Duvall, but head off the beaten path for more unique offerings. Hemingway's House is a nice tour too - also, I'd recommend the midnight cruise on the Western Union, and hanging an afternoon at the Schooner Warf bar.....

Good luck! It's a fun place to hang and get away.
