At last at last...off of Craigslist. Alas, not as good as the free one on freecycle a few weeks ago...had to pay $300 for this. About 40-50 years old, from a casket factory fire. No lining, no finish...in fact rather rusty...but intact and ready to scare. Getting ready to give it some of the paint you put over rust.
I'm happy though....

Thats fantastic!! Personally, I'd leave it as it. The old rusted finish gives it a really creepy look. Well worth the money IMO. Congrats!!
That thing is screaming for a pneumatic pop up!

I agree, that is a fantastic find. And it's already weathered!! Nice!!
There will come a time when you have a chance to do the right thing.
I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by.

Yes don't paint it. Unless you can make it look more used than it is.

Thats what I told my friends, but they seem to think it should be shiny black...I was going for silver...I want to keep it from rusting through, thats why the rust stopping paint.
Besides, where it will be is very dim, and I want this to show up well by candle/electric flicker light. Silver, chrome handles, and white lining.
Lining it in the top may be the hard part.

I guess it really depends on the look you want. If you want the whole thing to look showroom ready, then by all means, do it up! It will look great!
But if you want some grime and tattered lining, etc., it would look amazing too. You can get clear coat (from matte to high gloss) Rustoleum spray paint, so you can keep the look exactly as it is now BUT avoid more rusting in the future.
I personally like the aged, tattered look but whatever floats your, eh, coffin!
Whatever you decide to do, I know you'll keep us posted and full of pics. EXCELLENT find, and a damned good price, even if it wasn't free.
