Just wanted to let you all know that a company called Lindberg models is bringing back a 1/1 (life size) pirate skull plastic model kit. Could be helpful for props or making castings. Also bringing out a 1/1 scale pirate gun and a few other life size old guns. Pirate is supposed to retail at $19.99 but you will be able to find it at a lower cost at some shops. Link to pics:

As I own a hobby shop I found out about these a little early. No date is given but hopefully they will come out by summer so we can have time to play with them.
I will have them on our website
www.houseofhobbies.com and I am sure many others will have them as well. AAAAUUUURRRGHH!!

I am always in favour of more skulls in the general marketplace, but something about this product is pretty stinky:
"(Kit does not include sand, gold foil for tooth, bandana, jewels or desert creatures.)"
So... we'll be paying $20 for a basic, plain old skull kit (not even an aged one, since the kit is described as a fun way to 'learn how to age' things).
And where then does Lindberg come off calling this a 'Pirate Skull' when
they're not providing ANYTHING that makes it a pirate skull, except a misleading box design?
What makes this a pirate skull at all, Lindberg?
Seems like they want to capitalize (late I'd say) on the Pirate craze without actually laying out any money to really DO so, but expecting us to pay a higher price for it?
Expect to hear about Lindberg pulling this kit, or at least changing the box soon after release, because unless that little disclaimer is printed far more prominently on the box than it is on the website, people will call 'false advertising' and I'd agree with them.
I also have a problem with paying $20 for an unbuilt skull. I love building, I love model-making, and I love skulls, but I've paid a lot less than $20 for an already built/finished skull.
In fact, I've made skulls which look an awful lot like the box on that kit, and did the whole thing (including bandana, tooth, etc) for UNDER their $20 msrp.
Think I'll avoid this one, unless the price comes closer to $8-$10 for the kit, which is where it ought to have been from the beginning.
Sorry to dump on your considerate announcement of this coming product, hobbyguy, I'm not one to derail a kind offering of info, but this kit seems like a cheat to me.

Yep, thanks for the info, but with bucky skulls going for $12 to $23 no assembly required it seems kinda gouging without a few extras in the box.

Can usually get Bucky skulls for $5 during the spring sale. But I do like the pirate skull, nice option for kids who have the interest.

I think it looks very cool. I do agree that I would probably go a different route myself though.

The molds used for this kit have been around for a long time. Mike C hit the nail on the head - they are capitalizinig on the "pirate craze" without really investing in it.
Sad thing is, adding a piece of cheap cloth, a small square of foil and a small container of burnt sienna paint (All of which have been added to model kits over the years) would give them the advertising/bragging rights of claiming everything is included to make the skull shown. And it would add very little to the overall cost.
Expect to see it available for considerably less than the MSRP.

Guess I was a little excited to get a product at the hobby shop that could be used for props. I use paint and glue from the shop but that is about all that can be used for props / sets. The price for the skull is in-line with other plastic kits and your right, this is older tooling that has just been re-released, but it is the only hobby shop type skull kit on the market. Just excited that now we have a skull to offer for kids school projects etc. AAAUUURRGGHHH!!!

HobbyGuy - I'm sorry, I didn't mean to rain on your parade! You're right, it is nice to have a model kit that may raise some interest in either the macabre or model building in general. Any new kits on the shelves is a plus! And you're right, the price is inline with other kits -
I empathize with you - I worked for Polar Lights and hated to see them sold to RC2 who ended the figure kit line.
BTW - have you checked out Moebius models? Frank's first offering is Dr. Jekyll as Mr. Hyde - completing the 1/8 scale Aurora series that PL began...
