With all the ghost legends, voodoo being popular, Halloween became a big deal there. When we lived there people actually came from around the country to join in the mostly french quarter festivities. A year and a half later New Orleans is still a mess. Local, state, and federal govts are still at odds with each other over rebulding, repopulation efforts. Alot of the city is still abandoned. I'm glad to be out of there. I would tell anyone thinking of going there to not consider it. Wait until that area sees significant change ( which after living there for 34 years i dont believe that will ever happen), In a way it's a shame b/c that city has so much history to offer. People visited the tomb of the voodoo queen and marked an X on her tomb for good luck. Last Halloween i logged onto nola.com and clicked on their live bourbo cam, hardly anyone downtown. Maybe 1 day that city will be alive again.

Sad to hear your situation, and I can't blame you. They've done stories on the national & cable news about the high murder rate, and you really gotta feel for those folks who are staying there trying to have a life. Maybe with a successful Mardi Gras this year, things will turn around ~~~hope for New Orleans~~~

RATLADY- So ya live up here in Colorado now, eh?
I have heard that Anne Rice used to throw on helluva good Halloween Party down there in New Orleans.
I love the photos I have seen of the Graveyards out there also. NO will be back...stronger than ever and hopefully safer than ever.

Jack Reaper..... Yes we are now in Colorado, been here since sept 05. I am originally from Co, got forcibly moved to N.O. when i was about 4-5 yrs old, been trying to get back ever since. we resided in the Springs up until a few months ago now we are in Cripple Creek due to his job at 1 of the casinos. And yes Anne Rice used to throw some big todos, she also got into a very public scuffle with Al Copeland who is the founder of Popeye's Chicken to the point they would put out full page ads in the times picayune ( major new orleans newspaper), it basically turned into a friggen soap opera. Unless N.O. makes a major turnaround, gets rid of alot of its local, state, federal leadership which the voters refuse to do, I dont see much positive outcome there.

Ween12am eternal, Thank You......Unfortunatly crime and politicians there are gonna scare off alot of positive outcome not to mention downright corruption, mismangement, Remember Mayor Nagin's Chocolate City Speech? And lets not forget Cold Cash William Jefferson, a federal representative who was found to have thousands of dollars in his freezer, Gov Blanco who's withholding federal funds from the people, plus was asleep and could not be disturbed when the city was going under, PLUS she decided right after Katrina hit that she needed to redecorate the mansion. ( take in mind Baton Rouge was not affected) Theres no wonder that entire area is always on the news for everything negative.

From "Day-One" New Orleans has always been a city of much opportunity and many times those opportunitys were not always legal, like smuggling.
Add to this the huge amount of freight always coming into New Orleans, the number one busiest port for 150? years ?
Of course everything has a downside, like when 15,000 people a week would die from fever and an English newspaper man thought the above ground tombs were actually ovens to incinerate all the dead...well, they do look like ovens, sort of....
I have vacationed in New Orleans several times (but not lately) tremendous history in that town and some of the best of it you probably won't learn unless you go there.

Strange that this week's episode of Boston Legal made it look as if everything was back to normal in NO while Alan Shore and Denny Crane were looking out over the balcony. The creator usually uses his show to speak out politically or for one of his pet causes. Maybe he WAS actually trying to get more people to visit tho'.....

Deadna, thats a big problem there....People think everything is back to normal due to the french quarter being up and running especially after last nights saints game. But in other parts that simply is not the case, theres still abandoned areas, areas with no utilities, ppl still fighting with insurance companies, idiot fema, idiot sba and so on and so on....Now Mississippi is running circles around New Orleans, Miss is no longer 50th in alot of areas.......take a guess who is.

That really is a shame! I had no idea it was still so bad there. The year of the hurricane Mr L and I had planned a trip to Biloxi and a side trip to New Orleans (we had never been there before). Now, from this bleak report, it doesn’t sound like it will ever be the same again.

Mrs Leatherface, Figure it took Homestead Fla 10 years to recuperate from Andrew. Factor in La Politics, pocket lining, corruption, crime thats over 10 times the national average, The majority of New Orleans teachers not being certified, People with college degrees leaving for other areas, and a host of other issues its gonna take N.O. twice to 3 times longer if they ever do. The house we rented there for 9 years FINALLY got demolished about 2 months ago and according to a friend the debris is STILL sitting in the driveway. Only bright side is the Saints making it to the playoffs, The Voodoo resume playing and New Orleans has the arenabowl this year.
