One of my neighbors has decided that our "Face Plant" Witch prop lacks realism. This guy has lived here for at least five years and his boys are growing up attending our Haunts every Hallowe'en. Now, two weeks after I've set up the Witch on a Utility Pole, I hear that he's been telling other neighbors things like "the Witch is wearing shoes that a Witch wouldn't be expected to wear, the legs are too skinny, the hands are proportionally too big, the hair is obviously a wig", stuff like that. I don't set stuff up to be criticized, and I certainly don't claim to be a Hollywood Special F/X guy, but come on... I thought it was supposed to be a big joke. Anybody else have neighbors who are hyper-critical?

I wouldnt let it bother you. We do it for fun, kids and ourselves. Theres always someone with a comment.
Last year I had these two girls looking at our display, one said"wow, this is so cool". The other one said "anyone with a lot of money can have all this".
I was shocked, as I have no money and have made all my stuff.
Comments will always be make weather negative or positive, i've learned to let them not get to me.
I'll see what my neighbors have to say, its my first year here at this house.

Ya know, some people are like that, need to criticize (to others) to bring you down and them up. Maybe its a self esteem issue... Do what you do, have fun, and fugetaboutit!
Johnny 933 - I hear you about the money. After our party one of our friends said to my wife we must have laid out a fortune for all the stuff. Yea, we splurged on 2 Gemmy figures this year, but everything else was home made or bought at after Halloween sales...and this is a 25 year accumulation!

johnny933 , i had the money comment also from a young boy old enough to know better not to say comments like this......he said wow you must be very rich to have all this....
This year we had a donnation box out on a witch as well and one said well if eveyone leave a little something it will repay the damages the winds caused this weekend ......my husband told him well probbaly not as not everyone is as generous as you sire as he gave us 5$ and he said a big thank you as the guy said everything was done beautifully with alot of taste and details.....my husband told him when it is free 80% here alot will not bother getting money out .....like my husband said we apreciate doing it for those who apreciate it in return , thats why we do it every year...
Wolfman , their is always a close minded person that will comment on something and dont see the big picture behind your good intentions and efforts.....last year i had a nasty lady comment on that my props talk all in english , well i told her if you find me a prop maker and compagny in quebec that makes and sell props like i have in french for the same price i pay in the usa or less i will by them there......i told her after that the young kids didnt mind what they say as they wore too impressed with all the animation and sounds and music etc.....and will another couple half hour later who spoke mainly english wore thrilled with our display and spent an hour here looking at all the stuf talking lol.....
maybe next year invite her to make a prop with you and pay for half the cost ? lol lol
just a tought

A Witch From Canada,
Bravo!! I like the way you put it--
.....like my husband said we apreciate doing it for those who apreciate it in return , thats why we do it every year...
I collect food for the local food shelf. That was my wife's idea. She said I put so much time and effort into the Halloween display - why not collect for the people that have nothing or very little. It allows the attendees to show thier appreciation.
And the heck with the people with the closed minds or petty comments.

What awful neighbors! Jealous to the core!
Don't let it bother you.
My neighbors are jealous AND cheap! We live way out in the middle of nowhere. Because of my home haunt, TOTs drive up to 6 MILES to visit every year. If it weren't for me, the neighbors would only have to give out <10 pieces of candy. NOW they have to give out 100!

Just tell them, "Well, I'll take that as a compliment. I made them." It is, too, in its way: the girl was saying that your props rate up there with the expensive commercial ones. (Chances are pretty good that yours are actually even better crafted than the commercial ones, and she simply saw the quality and made an assumption.)

Darned if you do, darned if you don't. Might be fun to turn it into a friendly contest (o.k., if you can do so much better, let's see it...) Have your other neighbors judge. Like you said, it's supposed to fun/jokey kind of thing. Once they see how hard things are to actually make, might shut 'em up.

I like the "you must have spent a fortune" comments, too.
Yeah, I spent a lot of money, but not as much as you think. We also do everything ourselves. I laid our own patio. They pay contractors. We laid our own sod, they paid someone. We cut down our own trees, they pay someone. I cut my own grass, they hire people. They have blinds worth thousands, mine cost $400 because I cut and hung them. I installed our gutters. I did our landscaping. I build my own furniture, etc. etc... if they want to talk about frivilous expenses.
