I want to know from those in the know, what IS the best Halloween audio recording?
Of course we have Halloween themed music, we have scary sounds collections, and we have sound tracks to movies, television specials and others.
I myself am not a big fan of your 'monster mash' type songs, however I love the theme songs from The Munsters and the Addams Family, but my favorite is the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown soundtrack.
My final answer is 'Horror Sounds of the Night', a scary sounds tape I got a Hallmark store back in the 80's. I played it every Halloween. I would like to find something similar on CD if anyone can suggest one.

Horror Sounds of the Night! That's my gold standard for a great sound effects tape, too. I wish I could find it on CD; I once bought a CD called "Horror Sounds" (by Fun World) hoping it was a retitled version of "Horror Sounds of the Night". Sadly, it wasn't. "Horror Sounds" is decent if you want something mildly spooky for small children. However, it has its fair share of bizarre sound effects choices (like a rooster crowing. Seriously).
I haven't been able to slog through it yet, but scarstuff.blogspot.com is supposed to have some great stuff.
The Midnight Syndicate are famed for their atmospheric music. You can listen to some samples here.
Here is a great, free graveyard soundscape made by a forum member.

While I'm generally not a fan of Mannheim Steamroller, their FX CD which came in a two disc set a couple of years ago is pretty good. It's not your typical groaning, growling chain rattling sounds. The music CD is not too good, IMO, but we like the FX one quite a bit.

I have to go with the original...Chilling Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House - the 60's version. To date it STILL has some of the best FX I've heard. It's too bad they haven't remastered it for CD, but it can be found online and downloaded.

The new Midnight Syndicate is great. The 13th Hour. Mausoleum d' Haverghast is one of my favorites. I don't get into the Monster mash or Thriller . Even though Michael Jackson can send a chill up you spine. But thats for another reason.
"Every night will be another evil scene, like a horror dream, I want, I command you to sceam. Halloween you are my pride. Halloween not just a dream."

"Sounds to make you shiver"
It came out on lp back when I was a kid (late 60's or 70's?). Somehow it disapeared, maybe I was playing it too much. hehe... Recently found a copy on ebay & made a back up copy to cd.
Besides Midnight Syndicate, (which I have their entire collection of 8 cds)
I really like Nox Arcana. They aren't known as well as MS.
Darklore Manor (liked better than 13th Hour)
Necornomicon
Winter's Knight
Transylvania
Carnival of Lost Souls (better than MS's current cd "Out of the Darkness" remix)
Blood of the Dragon (11/06)

Big Scream tv's "Thunderstorms"
The Haunted Mansion- Haunted hits (loosely based on the Disney movie)
Drew's Famous "Ultimate Halloween Party"
Heavy Halloween

I know this is old, but I just saw the htread doing a search for something else. For me asking this question is like asking which is your favorite child. I have a blog full of Halloween stuff so you can see what I mean how it would be hard to chose.
Mostly Ghostly Music Sharing Blaaahhhggg!!!

I like what big scream tv has done.
9 different cds.. each with its own theme
i.e thunder, screams,chainsaws etc etc
so you can have a different theme for each room.
Most of the sound cds have a bunch of sounds altogether and dont really make sense.
I also like the midnight syndicate cds. very intense, like being in your own Horror movie!

I know this is a bit off topic.....but....I was wondering too what your best audio set up is. I do love midnight syndicate for the atmosphere, but I was wondering more about speaker placement...mono, stereo, 5.1, etc....different equipment also. What have you found gives you the best or most effective results. Localized sound, mixing, etc.
Ok since I seem to have gone far afield, I may as well add another bit off topic question...a few years ago there was a company that sold an audio player with several speakers and a cd. You placed the speakers a few feet apart and ghost footsteps would seem to be walking across a wooden floor...that is the sound traveled from one speaker to the next, until at the end, the ghost turned and walked the opposite direction. Does anyone know what I am talking about or where it was made?
Thanks....Dan, the truly Hideous CreatureNo honestly, it's not just a nickname....I'm truly Hideous.
