    Ok folks!

With the Big Day fast approaching, I'm trying to come up with something fun I can do with my students. I want to make it math-related, but that's not turning out to be very easy. I teach geometry and advanced algebra to high school students. I want to do something fun, even if I have to do a "boring" lesosn the first half and then something fun the 2nd half. So I need something fun for about 30 minutes or so.

Got any suggestions? I guess I could play halloween bingo for candy, but I'm worried I may try something that's not cool enough for high schoolers. So if you are a high schooler or have a kid that is one, suggestions would be fantastic.

Math, oooh, that IS a tough one. I mean, finding the Value of "The Mummy" or determining the distance between "Frankenstein" and "Dracula" will wear off real quick. Sorry, can't help.

What do you get when you divide the circumference of a jack-o-lantern by its diameter.........

    Pumpkin Pi

    Bad dum bum!

Good luck. It is nice to here that a teacher wants to do something fun.

Well I am a math failure too, but I have kids. Last year my 11th grader had to do a report in a class on some music stuff, and for part of it I had to come. Actually, I had to BE the report, it was like a guest speaker type thing. I wasn't happy about it, but thought OK I am going to make it the best I can. So my son gave his oral report on it and then I did my part. It was trivia on the musician he picked. I made it like a game show and when they got the answer correct I tossed a pack of candy to them. I don't even remember much about it now, but one kid leaned over to my son and told him "I'm having YOUR mom come for my report too". Basically all I wanted to offer for you was food works good, candy, edible rewards. I think even math would be fun if it was themed for Halloween and offered some friendly competition for something tasty.

Exactly, Lilly! It's already a given candy will be involved, because I've gave candy on my first day and now every day I get asked for candy. lol I told the kids they would get some Halloween day, not a day sooner.

Hmmmm, a trivia-like game may work, even if I just use questions I make up from the chapter we're in.

Haunted Bayou - that's hilarious! I have a list of halloween riddles and that one is going on top!

Moon - I wish I could just bake cookies! Unfortunately, I'm student teaching, and just having fun I'm sure won't sit well with my mentor teacher. When I have my own classroom, you can bet Halloween will be work-free! lol

Glad you like it. I got if off of a halloween card that I gave an engineer friend one year. He loved it.

I was kind of thinking about a competition also. You could do it kind of like a math-bee and have a grand prize for the last person. Everyone else could get a treat bag as they are eliminated. If I can think of anything else I will post it.

Maybe play around with the idea of a jar filled with jelly beans. How many jelly beans are in the jar? Is there a formula to easily figure that out, based on the size of the jar and the size of each jelly bean?

Or anything to do with the size of a graveyard and what angle one would have to place a floodlight in order to get the most coverage of area.

Ok, I'm no mathematician so forgive me if the specific math details of this are fuzzy and vague.

I would try to do something with the whole "pumpkin pi" thing, make a hands on math lab out of it somehow.

Maybe bring in mini pumpkins and small pumpkins of various sizes and do an exploratory type thing to figure out their measurements and use theorums (ahem...or whatever those things are, you fill in the blanks) or challenge them to a carving contest with very specific rules (the degree of the angles of their eyes must be such and such, etc) and the winner gets the "pumkin pi" a real pumpkin pie with coolwhip shaped into the pi symbol?

I know if we'd had a student teacher do something like that we would have been talking about it for years! Of course I might just be craving pumpkin pie.

I just found this site which has elemetary age ideas of what to do with pumpkins, but you could easily up the challenge by making the problems harder.

    Hello everyone,
I must say I am a grade 11 student and there is nothing better than after a long lesson some sort of interuption that is completely unexpected! Even if you could organize a couple other people to burst in and do a skit Ghostbusters etc that will really get attention! I just know the feeling of long lectures and how welcome an unexpected break is
Therefore make it seem like a normal day and then maybe rip off your clothes at the end of the lesson to reveal a costume and taddah the fun begins!!!
Just a hint from a student!

I feel no pain, no sorrow, I am...Hollow!
