I guess it had to happen sometime, but I was hoping it wouldn't. After over a decade of decorating my yard, with never an incident, last night somebody stole the head off my sea serpent. When I first started decorating I was concerned about the safety of what I was putting out there. You start adding it up and I've got hundreds of dollars worth of stuff out there. I used to actually bring in my masks on mischief night. But, I've never had a problem. The kids have never touched my display, and even the toilet paper on mischief night passes me by.
I wasn't really so much mad, as I was hurt I guess. After all, I put all this effort into halloween for the kids. Yeah, I have fun doing it, but only because there's an audience for it. I love it when I look out front and see some 10 year old on a bike goggling at the yard. The mask for the serpent head is probably irreplaceable. I've had it a long time. On halloween night, I hook up a fogger to it and smoke comes out of his mouth.
I've never "fenced" off the display area, as one of my neighbors has always done. It hasn't ever been necessary. Now, I'm going to have think about it.

Sorry to hear about the serpent head chaoscat. We've always left our yard open as well, but this year I decided to fence it off. While I've never had anything blatently stolen, our pillars kept mysteriously falling over last year (mind you they are huge and are about 150lbs each and anchored to the ground) and a couple of props took some minor damage. Never had a problem before that.
This summer we've had problems with many houses getting egged in our neighborhood. I decided that leaving the yard open again was probably just asking for trouble. It's sad that some people have to destroy others property to have fun.

yeah, last year i added a graveyard fence. i like to look at it as a prop that has a dual function!
