Most of the volunteers for the haunt want to use a chainsaw as the final scare.
For some reason I feel like it is a different kind of scare than a pop up or an actor. Should I go ahead and do it? What are your thoughts?

To me, it's not a scare. So I vote no. it's almost become a cliche at a haunt, and you are far better off with something more subtle. JMNSHO.

I agree they make so much noise...it loses its scare effect for the next group that wanders by.

A real chainsaw? Do you take the chain off? do they work with the chain off? Will it ruin them if you do it that way? Just wondering.

A chainsaw with the chain off still has the gear sproket rotating and this has been known to really painfully tangle someone's long hair.
The engine is hot, "hot" can burn you or someone else.
The fumes from the engine is a big NO-NO indoors.
A chainsaw-haunter would yank his saw to start-scare every night and his shoulder muscles were really ripped and sore from this, was it worth it?
Only he can tell you that.
There is a phoney chainsaw with battery powered speakers inside it, it isn't cheap (yet), maybe $600.oo?
Maybe a small, junked chainsaw with huge speakers in the wall behind it playing recorded chainsaw sounds would be the cheapest, easiest way for the long run of it?
A remote switch powering a relay that only interupts the speaker wire may be the best way to do this, leaving a cd player (or whatever?) continiously playing. Put the remote on/in the chainsaw handle."My Insanity is well-respected, until they wiggle free and become a stringer for a tabloid"

As much as a Chainsaw would be pretty good to use it would be a bit over the top. I mean its not every Halloween you see a dude walkin' down your street with a hefty ol' Chainsaw now is it? But it would be good to use but I vote no. But at the end of the day its up to you isn't it?

And what's wrong with say a power drill or a circular saw?
They are both noisy & over looked as a scare device. I agree that chainsaws get used a lot in haunted houses & hayrides. Think of alteratives to scare people, be creative.

My final scare is a clown with a chainsaw. I agree that they have been way overused, yet they still send them runnin and screamin every time.

I went to a haunted house last night which had a circular saw or something like that-- anyway it was round and it made a lot of fancy sparks when they ran it along the floor. It was pretty neat, and a definitely surprise, whereas I sorta expected a chainsaw...

Well I couldn't help but notice that the poll results (at the time I am posting this anyway) have YES in the lead but mostly NO posts on the thread. I say go ahead and use one. We have a mile long trail and it takes 30+ people to haunt. Not only do we have one chainsaw, we have a double chainsaw scare. Yes, it's a given that is why we do it. Just as they think they are safe, the second one comes out and they work out a routine sometimes trapping people. We don't have issues with funes obviously as it is outside, and it is at a spot on our trail where you can hear it off in the distance but there is so much other noise etc., that it just add's to the anticipation that the chainsaw's are coming. We used a drill one year, (happened to be a clown) but the report back was that it didn't really scare anyone.
