What a shame that has to happen.quote:Originally posted by Jack Reaper
On occasion, people have walked in the door of my friends' Halloween store just to tell us that we were going to Hell because we furthered the cause of Halloween!
How arrogant that someone could think they "know" what happens to another's soul in the afterlife. Oh yeah, that was arrogance at its worst. I'm sure God has better things to do than damn store owners to hell for selling Halloween merchandise! And you'd think with all the psychologists out there today that people who seem unable to control themselves to do such things could get some professional help.

You can't engage people like that in dialog because what ever you say they can counter, just as you can counter what they have to say. You'll never convert them and when you acknowlege them with a reply then they know that you read their stuff and now they have a chance to try to convert you to their point of view. I always give people with extreme points of view (religious or otherwise) a very wide berth.
No one can make you do anything you don't want to do, right?

That is ok, I was told by a nun I was going to hell for playing paintball with some friends. I was glorifying war afterall.quote:Originally posted by Jack Reaper

Growing up I was also going to hell for reading comic books, playing Dungeons and Dragons, and listening to heavy metal. Today they just stick just to my "lifestyle choice."
I am a bit depressed because I have yet been told by the clergy that I am going to hell because of Halloween.

I used to write to Chick Publications, and all the religious zealots that subscribe to that nonsense, but I've learned in all my years that most of those people made up their minds a lifetime ago and will not budge from what they believe. They are the sort who confuse fact and truth. The paramount reason for this is that their primary weapon, The Bible, is replete with double-standards and vague laws which are so open to interpretation, that no conclusions of theirs can be argued. Like the English language, every rule has an exception-in their favor.
I once wrote a calm, organized (and rather abridged) history of Halloween and offered it as a guest column in the local paper. I mentioned how it related to modern christianity, as well as the more recently established traditions. The next day, and for weeks afterward, I was innundated with truly ANGRY people, screaming about my earst-while journey to Hell and my corruption of the faithful... [}
] It didn't matter what facts I presented, what sources I quoted, or what irrefutable logic I supplied. I didn't agree with them. And that means I must be wrong...hmm.
I have found the most effective way to combat these religious crusaders is to fight fire with fire. I offer the following passage to you as a stand-alone retort for any of their accusations:
Colossians 2:16-17 "Do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ."
I find a little self-examination goes a long way. That or the under-the-breath comment "Don't you have some sins to confess?" [

MINDCRIME: I'm glad you posted that bible passage. It reminds me of how most of the Christians I run across seem to edit the bible at will, and always to meet their needs.
