Last year we did our first haunted hay ride. It was a last minute decision and really could have been better. It was for our two kids and their friends (so a bunch of kids age 11-13). A few were pretty ugly about how boring it was. Sooo.... This year we are starting our planning early with the goal of making those boys either wet their pants or cry!

We have this idea of doing a more interactive hay ride. We are still planning on the basic haunted hay ride with actors and chain saws and the whole bit, but we also get them out of the "safety" of the trailer and into the dark. I should start by saying its a small group so their will only be one trip. We have no time restraints since no one is waiting for the next ride.

One thought was that it would be a scavenger hunt and at certain areas they would have to collect something to move one. We are going in between making everyone get out or having a drawing or election so that only one person has to get out.

Our second thought would be to just have walk through stations here and there where they have to walk through a tunnel or a thin path in high grass.

We have a long car hauling trailer that currently has no walls. We were thinking of building walls just from the wheels around the front (so no one can fall off in front of the wheels and get run over.) Behind the wheels it is just an open trailer. This would allow the kids to get off easily and the monsters to get on! We were thinking we would line the hay bails down the center of the trailer with everyone siting with their feet out toward the sides.

Any thoughts or ideas on this? We are still very much in the planning stages and not sure how to play it out yet.

Sounds like a plan. I really like the idea of having to scavenge for some kind of artifact before being allowed to move on. If it's only one person doing that, it would be more unnerving, I think; the others could get tormented by monsters in the meantime on occasion, too, since their attention would be focused elsewhere

I like the get out and walk idea, perhaps you could incorporate a bit of story to it, like the wagon broke down, so now they'll have to make the rest of the trip on foot. Or it ran out of gas, go see if you can find a gas pump or gas tank, broken mechanics, go find missing pieces etc. All the while having your monsters pop out from the shadows scaring the pants off of em.
