Okay, I'll do you guys one foot better than a 7-foot diameter inflatable balloon. I just saw this link in my newsletter email from American Science and Surplus, a plain but light-colored 8-foot latex inflatable weather balloon for $18.95!

Here's the link. It was one of the featured items on their email page so I'm sure it will get a lot of eyes on it. I have no idea where you would get that inflated or what it would cost but no doubt it won't be filled with lung power!

So if you don't fill it with helium, could you use an air compressor to fill it out most of the way or fully, and still manage to anchor somehow to sit on your roof? That seems like such a good price.

Looks like it's got 3 or 4 load patches. Should be easy enough to anchor to my roof!
On second thought, I might just do a large plywood cutout and project on that....hmmmmm....Jack? Maybe we struck on an idea here?

I would think the plywood would get pretty heavy. What if you inserted a somewhat rigid but bendable tubing inside the American Science weather balloon to form a circle. It would be a 2D latex moon then. I'm sure there is some sort of connector for tubing to attach to both ends to close off the circle. Deflated they say the weather balloon is like 40 inches in diameter, pretty big, it has a yellowish color to it. It would be lighter and easier to mount probably and I think make a good surface to project on. The latex would be waterproof as well.

If you didn't want to project on it you might be able to light it from behind and get a glow from it, but not sure how thick the latex is, like would it be translucent to give you the look you want? I still think the weather balloon is interesting.
