It's aaallll Disney's fault. The movie series "Pirates of the Caribbean" is the connection in recent years. Peter Pan was ofc also, in an earlier time frame. Although, the latter was more inspirational with respect to costumes...not haunt themes. PotC was a little more dark (and humorous), being based on a ship with a ghost crew, than Peter Pan though. Don't worry, it's not exactly my cup of tea either.
It's just something that I would'nt do myself, no matter the popularity of the films. That said, I can still admire the technicality of the well executed haunts based on it. *Tips hat to Hi-Rez & his awesome display*

I'm also starting to think about a Victorian Haunted House theme. Your right its Disneys fault. If only I could make the garage part of the haunt victorian themed then the rest of it pirate themed. Hmmm. I've got some thinking to do.
Edit: Just had a great idea. After looking at Halloween Horror Nights Orlando's website, and reading the description of a maze called the forsake, I was given a great idea. You could venture through a Spanish village destroyed by pirates. I'll also incorporate the ideas collected on this thread. If you have any ideas of what you think would look cool in this walkthrough please do tell. Well I better get designing, I've got lots of work to do.

I would definitely do Pirates. People have a deep seeded attachment to pirates right off the bat. I remember being scared yet tantalized when i rode pirates of the caribbean as a kid. La llorana is a pretty narrow subject, and i think it would be extremely difficult to do an entire walkthrough. Most people probably arent familiar with it anyways. With pirates, there are so many decorations and variations you can do/use.

I am definitely doing pirates. After I have a list of all the props and pictures of how the walls will be painted, I get to work. With this big expansion I am planning I'm going to need so many new props. Planning on jumping into pneumatics. It has begun! Halloween 2012 is going to be great!

I would go with the pritaes also. Making them scary is easy. Your biggest obstacle will be time. Good luck.

Yet another theme change has occurred and I am now going to do a Haunted Hotel. I wish I owned a theme park so I could do all of these.
