My husband made 6' columns (minus the ravens) for our yard display this year and did an awesome job (in my opinion). I was sooo excited for him to put them in place in the yard...and then I saw the gate he made.
The gate is too short!
He thinks it looks fine. I think that if I got a running start I could jump it.
I asked him if he could redo the gate and he said not this year. Now he is saying that he won't make a new gate for next year.
Please tell me what you think. Too short or just right?

Yeah, I have to agree, it's too short. Instead of rebuilding the whole gate, maybe he could just add an additional section on the bottom. The columns DO look awesome!

Those are amazing columns - very nice work! I think it's the arch of the gate that's throwing the proportions off. I think an arch is better suited for a tall gate that goes as high as the columns (and probably the wow factor that you were hoping for). The gate would be fine as it is, in my opinion, if it went straight across at the lowest point. Maybe you could get him to cut it even? Man, do I know how it feels to care very much about small details and have my husband say "it's fine"! We have a row of coconut palms at our house in Mexico that looks like they were planted by a blind man (unevenly spaced apart and uneven distances from the fence line). Every time I see them I mentally move them straighter
. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Dear haters,(kidding)
I'm ok with the idea of adding to the bottom of it, I will probably re-do though because I wanted to do a row of circles in the middle of it anyway, I just ran out of time so I rushed it a little. But whatever you do don't tell bootoyoutoo that I said that.

I didn't vote but do think if they were taller, maybe 3/4 the height of the column they would look more proportional.
Maybe you wouldn't have to redo the whole gate. Maybe you could add some kind of coupler or connector ring of sorts to the top of what you have (that would be slightly larger in diameter than the current poles) and then fit the same size pole into the top of that.
I like what your husband did overall. The columns look great. Wish my DH was so inclined. Heck i had to have our landscaper add some courtyard columns to our landscape plan in order to get some for halloween! Hubby's just not into construction. I've even tried psychological tactics like telling him how sexy he looks in a tool belt and sweat shirt. Didn't work.
I'm the one with the basic tools when we got married and combined stuff.

I'm not going to vote on this either. Be glad he built those awesome columns. If he comes on here and asks what I think, I'll tell him..

Is it wise to get into an argument between husband and wife?
Generally...no....
But since they both DID speak up maybe its safe-ish.
It's OK as is. It'd be better taller, but it's still pretty cool. An arch over top of the columns might make the gate size be even less of an issue, I don't know....
With those cool columns it'd be awesome to see some scrollwork in the gates. But that'd probably be hard to do in PVC...guess I'm just a gate snob

I can see what you are saying about the height but I also see how your hubby saw it. If you want it realistic then it should be high and imposing. But, I see it as inviting Halloweenish for the ToTs. Kind of Disneyesque.
So, I agree with both of you

Ok, 3/4 of the height of the columns, with an arch, I could definitely get onboard with. This all started because she wanted them as tall as the columns, and just a simple arch to the gate itself. I think it would be a little boring, I used the pattern I did because I thought it looked better than too simple. But most of all, the cemetery is actually behind the gate so I wanted people to be able to see over it.

I think the top of the arch should be the height of the columns and then descend from there. And I think most people have the ability to look between the bars.
