It's always nice when something so positive comes from a situation that seemed so dire. Way to save Halloween! It just goes to show you that deep down Halloween still really matters to a whole lot of people. Way, deep, deep down for some people but still ........

Sadly thought there must be HF members in this situation. Sorry to hear this included you. We've been without power for maybe a day or so and I can't imagine the inconveniece of such a long outage. Do you have heat and hot water? I know most gas appliances rely on electric starters these days making things really tough.

But back to Saving Halloween! You should either invite your local paper or TV station out or send them pics of your yard along with what you told us here. I think it would make a great human interest story of how one neighbor refused to give up on halloween and ended up rallying his neighborhood and making it something special for everyone. I'm sure you could have had all the town's kids at your yard if they only knew. I'm proud of you guys! BTW did you take pics?

Aside from seeing the kids in their costumes and seeing their reaction to our decorations, I know both my husband I enjoy talking to our neighbors. Most parents however don't come up to the door area but stay on the street. Your thread has me thinking we need to think of someway to change that for next year. With you being one of only a few houses participating this year it was the perfect time for parents and families to mingle. Don't want a power outage in my area for that to happen but will need to come up with something. Thanks for sharing the magic.
Thank You. Actually we were fortunate and got our power back on day 5. We also had a little generator that would run the furnace and well pump. We had bought it for some camping and far from the house treehouse building. Never imagined we would be out of power for 4 or 5 days not once but twice in as many months. (Irene & Alfred) On Saturday there were still over 500 homes without power in town. Down around 50 now I think.

My wife and I both commented to each other about how nice it was that people lingered. Where I had started the Haunt as a kid at my folks house we always had people stay for a while and that was in part because our house there was on a busy road with not one neighbor for a mile or so. People would drive down and park in a dirt lot next door so there was no other house to get to. Folks usually went TOT in town and then drove down to sit by the fire.

Saturday night, not being Halloween meant that people that normally walk to our house drove instead so I think that played a part. We were the only stop so they drove. We also always have a fire going. At this house we have one of those low round fire pits on legs with a wire mesh and it was hovering around 35 degrees so that kept people in the driveway for a bit warming up. For several years we had expierienced the same thing you described that parents often would not even leave the street but slowly over the years they have been inching into the yard. We also put out a guest or sign in book. It's is a lot of fun to sit down with after and read what people wrote.

I actually had meant to put up a thread asking if anyone else did that. It was always my Mom's thing at her house and it was quite a book as we often easily got 500 TOT's. I felt funny doing it in our new house at first but after a couple years my Mom convinced me to put one out and really glad we did as this year people went right to it.
    Thanks,
    Dan
