Okay, like the poem. Anyone care to illuminate for me this piece of history? History class was a long time ago for me! And the only Bonfire that comes to mind was the movie Bonfire of the Vanities....guess I'm sorely lacking in this area but this sounds like something commemorated annually on the other side of the pond from me.

Some dude called Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the houses of parliament by packing the cellars with gunpowder. He was caught and so thwarted. Every year we celebrate this in Britain - we celebrate with firework displays, bonfires (many bonfires burn a "guy" on top, which is a mannequin made from newspaper and old clothes) there are also traditional Bonfire Night foods like cinder toffee, baked potatoes, sausage dishes are popular, and any kind of hearty warming comfort food.

When I was small we would bring out jacket potatoes and cook them in the embers at the edge of the bonfire. We would also roast marshmellows over the fire once it had died down. We also used to go out with our guys and ask for "a penny for the guy" but people don't seem to do that in these parts.

We went to a Guy Fawkes party on Friday night. I think this was the sixth annual bash.
The family hat throws the party has British roots-she is actually from England and he has a Scottish background.
Always tons of food (bangers and mash), then there's the big bonfire burning the effigy of Guy. After that a cool fireworks display.
Always a lot of fun and interesting to see!
