I own my own business (a martial arts school). I recieved an e-mail from a very well respected person in the business with this idea:
Good morning,
Trunk or treat? What in the heck is that?
It’s a way for kids to trick or treat without going house to house. Instead parents decorate their cars and open their trunks – your students then can go from car to car and trick or treat.
GREAT WAY TO ATTRACT guests. Have all your students invite friends on facebook. Be sure to block off the area with cones and have staff members monitor the area for safety. In the video below you will find more details.
You can double the fun with having a contest for the best carved PUMKIN - families can display thier pumpkin by thier cars.
Now, This can be done in any neighborhood too. Here is their flyer:
Join in the Fun at East West Karate’s Annual Trunk or TREAT!
Wear your Costume and Trunk or Treat through our Parking Lot of Cars.
Join in the fun and games. Refreshments will be served.
Cars will be decorated for the event with lots of treats and surprises.
PRIZES for the top 3 cars decorated!!!
1st: FREE Week of Summer, Winter or Spring Break Camp
2nd: FREE 1/2 hour Private Lesson with the instructor of your choice
3rd: $25 gift certificate to the Pro Shop
Parents are encouraged to come an hour early and decorate your cars.
Entry FEE for Cars is $10- sign up at the front desk
Have a Spooktacular Week!
P.S. Don’t forget to bring your child to our Halloween Costume Contest at 1pm!
You can modify this to your own needs. But it has potential.

I like the idea of trunk or treat just not on halloween day. That way kids can do both.
Our area doesn't do trunk or treat on halloween thank goodness it is usually a couple of days before.

My two cents! It detracts from "real Halloween, no matter who does it or what day it falls on. It is always billed as "an alternative" to Trick ot Treating. Why do we need an alternative to one of our great traditions? I would never support it or participate in it, in any way, shape or form. These activities will eventually replace traditional TOT if they gain enough support. I've also always thought that encouraging your kids to go to a strangers car and take candy from their trunk is not exactly a safe thing to do. I know, I'm a bit over zealous but the whole trunk or treat concept chaps my arse.
Americans sleep peacefully in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

I agree with both jdubbya and unorthodox. Plus I have always seen it as just an activity that not only perpetuates the urban legends of "unsafe trick or treating", but gives lazy parents an excuse not to get out and walk the neighborhood with their kids. Not a fan of "trunk or treat".

I agree with the other posters here. Here in Indiana a lot of church groups used Trunk or Treat or at least a form of it to seriously put a crimp in Halloween in the area. There were years back in the 90s when there were barely any TOTers out on Halloween night. The holiday seems to be slowing reviving itself thankfully. I also strongly agree with Madame Leota's comment about lazy parents. I can just imagine how many parents simply bring their kids and just drop them off in the parking lot instead of actually participating in the holiday with their kids. And furthermore I think kids should get that rush that I did where I got to see how far I could push myself and how big of a candy haul I could get. Back in the good old days I would keep going until there were no more houses with front porch lights on. Nowadays, we have been cut down drastically on the hours available to TOT making it even more difficult. I can only imagine that a limited amount of cars would be able to hamper that Halloween challenge even more.
Not to be a complete detractor from it I will say that it seems like a nice idea for younger children or perhaps handicapped children who are not able to handle the long walks and cooler temps. And as Halloween71 says, I am fine with it if it is not on the same day and competing with traditional Halloween. When Hallows Eve draws close once more
And terror rides the wind
The Ravenfells shall waken
And stalk their lands again.

I'm kind of torn about 'Trunk or Treat'. If there is no nearby area to go trick-or-treating, then I find it an acceptable alternative. Otherwise, it takes away from those who go through all kinds of effort to decorate their houses (gee, nobody here fits that, right?

). What I also don't like is that they generally require an extreme amount of candy be purchased, so anyone who is on a very limited budget is often cut off from participating in the event. Any form of TOTing is safe, provided parents take the necessary precautions and don't allow young children to wander off on their own, plus check their candy, of course; unaccompanied four-year-olds plodding their way up to random cars or houses to get treats is never good

most kids are greedy so if they can get candy on two days they will.

They still dress up they are just not going door to door.
Like I said my town does it on a different day allowing the kids to actually do tot(not replacing but adding to) see my post above about kids are greedy.
I get few tot less than 40.If I wanted to(I don't)I could go set up decorate my area and enjoy a party type of tot and 300 kids. And still do my regular tot.I think it would be fun as long as it is not on halloween.
I enjoy Halloween for the whole year realllly enjoy it the month of october so anything that has any sort of the Halloween element in it I am for.
If it is for the lazy parent than they don't have a child like mine was.I wouldn't have got away with it.
Everybody has their opinions but for ME(not everybody) halloween is about the kids and their enjoyment. So I would rather see something like trunk or treat rather than nothing.
