When the television series Auction Hunters played its "Chi-Town Showdown" episode, I was glued to the screen at the sight of the Victorian display casket. (For those who haven't seen the segment, it's an elaborately decorated tin casket used for viewings and not for burial, and probably held hundreds of bodies while in use). When I visited Woolly Mammoth, the store who bought it, it was nowhere to be seen. I figured someone had snapped it up immediately but decided to ask. To my amazement, it was sitting in the owners' garage and they "hadn't decided what to do with it, but they bought it mostly for the cherubs." Much negotiating later, as of ten minutes ago I am now the proud owner of the casket, minus one measly cherub. For someone whose haunt style has gradually been edging into Victorian gothic, I consider this to be the ultimate prop.

I probably can't afford to buy another prop for the next year, but with this beauty in my display, I don't think I'm going to need to! I love that it has been distressed over the years and don't intend to touch the paint, although some structural repairs (and possibly recasting/replacing the missing cherubs and feet) will definitely be in order after Halloween.

Apparently the show plays VERY fast and loose with the actual prices that the items sell for. I paid only a fraction of what the store supposedly purchased it for from the Auction Hunters.
