NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A Halloween display at a home in Brooklyn has been taken down after some called it a symbol of racism.
A scarecrow painted to have dark skin was hanging by a rope from a tree in front of a home in Kensington.
Some neighbors say the homeowner gets in the spirit of Halloween every year and believe he meant no harm by the display.
Guess "Honky the Clown" should be taken outta stores!![]()

The story has a pic. It looks like a skater dude to me!

Sorry, that doesn't look even a little bit like a scarecrow to me. Who puts layered t shirts and parachute pants on a scarecrow? I think it was a politically motivated stunt. Looks like it worked.

The guy could have been mocking the Occupy crowd, that is what the character looks like with t-shirts and cargo pants to me. I think calling it racist is a bit of a stretch; however because some people see every hanging figure as a lynched black man from the time of Southern Terror against blacks I would never put such a figure in my display.
I am not looking to offend my neighbors.

Offensive- maybe. Racist- doubt it. I wish the general public would see that it's not just black men that were hanged. Just say that it's not appropriate, and move on. I would love to put up a hanging man, but I know that it would not be appropriate for the neighborhood kids. So I refrain.

I agree with not using hanging (with a noose) props,,, it don't matter what color the skin is... (mine is usually a red mohogany, or red chestnut) now i have suspended a few over head,,, but no noose used..

How can you argue with this eloquent argument:
“It’s unacceptable,” said Charles Barron (D-Brooklyn). “You ain’t speaking for this whole community because some people on this block came by and said it was offensive. They came and said it was offensive. It’s not a cool decoration.”
That being said, each haunter needs to create an environment that works for them. I am not a fan of censorship in any form. I have never done, nor will I do scenes depicting a hanging, suicide or explicit torture with gore. That's just my choice though. I prefer psychological and classic scares. That's just me though.

NOT rasist by NO MEANS... but let me guess if it was a group of white hanging props, it would be predjustice because they were only white, idk. anyway i am not a fan of they torture stuff or sucide, but i can tie a decent noose and when i use them i put sacks over there head, kinda like in Friday 13 part 2 and the town that dreaded sundown.. sacked killers creep me out
