i want to do an understated but definitely haunted pirate themed room...the room already has nautical tones...
I bought a life-size skelly and am going to dress him in Dh's pirate costume and put a copy of Treasure Island in his hands. I think maybe a couple red, juicy apples on the table next to him along with a bottle of rum. Any ideas on how to haunt this room up? Not over the top but subtle touches...
tia.

candlelights in a silver candelholder thingy flickering somewhere, and a big leatherbound log book written in ink ( or blood..) with an old fashion pen. Maybe hes last entry was that something terrible or odd just happened, and now he will go and find out what it was..

When I did Pirates as a theme I bought a bunch of those dollar store pirate hats that come with a red scarf and eyepatch and put them on cheap skulls, or reaper type decorations, pumpkins etc.--anything you have can be translated to Pirate with some of those pirate hats, plus you can change all of them up a bit by adding feathers, decorating the eye patch with sequins stones, etc.
I also bought really cheap material in grey and black (like .75 or $1.00 a yard) and tore it to look like tattered sails and hung it from the ceiling--it gave a really nice effect. You could also do something like that in just one part of the room or on a wall. You also need treasure scattered around--look at your jewelry, silver, or anything sparkly--you can make a treasure chest or just have it laying about. Other treasure items--silver plate things from thrift store, rhinestones, pearls, from the craft store or dollar store, gold coins.
I also used things like raffia skirting, coconuts, seashells, sea glass--all of which you can get from party stores or sometimes the dollar store. I got the sound track from Pirates of the Caribbean (the ride, could use one from the movies too) to help set the mood. Once you start looking with "a pirate eye" you will see potential in all kinds of things.
You can adjust any of this to your definition of what is over the top--cause I have a hard time telling when it is over the top!

A GIANT MAP! A big fish hanging on the wall? A spotting scope made out of PVC spray painted gold/bronze? A chandelier? A globe?

Did I ever tell y'all I spent 30 days as a crew member of a fleet of square-rigged vessels? Never left port, which is a good thing since I get seasick, but yeah, true story...and one thing that always struck me was the amount of rope everywhere. Maybe that's something you could work into the decor? What about an astrolabe? Compass? Either lying by the book on the table. Or maybe a pocket sundial.
