So I finally got to visit Vikingsholm! I had posted one little pic in the Haunted Architecture thread, but I got that one off the internet. I just LOVE this place. Maybe because my relatives come from Iceland but OMG I wish I could buy this castle and live here, don't you??!!
BTW all hand carved wood! Unfortunately we were there out of tour season so I never got pics of the inside. Here's the quick backstory (so I heard) : super rich eccentric nordic lady sees Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe and thinks, Gee this reminds me of home, BUYS the inlet and builds a Viking Castle there. Sounds good to me! Another BTW there are only 2 ways to get to it: boat in or walk down a pretty good grade mostly dirt road. Not a great idea being pregnant with twins but atleast my real-man hubby was able to tow me up the road on the way back with our 3yr old on his shoulders! Now for the pics:
Coming up to the castle from the side
Detail of carved top things (don't really know what they're called)
One of the Front Hall doors
The other one - also hand carved - sweet!
Other side of front hall entrance-type ares
Don't you with the entrance to your home looked like this?
Closer in with shot of real front door

Continued ...
This is the view from your front door - not too shabby

Side view of Dining room looking area (only room you can see into)

Another cool room out thing (sorry I don' know architectural terms :P )

Castle part facing Lake (tour entrance)

Another side view - other side of lake-facing side

Roundy-castle-tower-part

Other side view - possible stable-horse-parking area

Ok, that's it. Hopefully next year I'll be able to add to this with pics of the inside!

Wow! That castle looks stunning! And of course a gazillion dollars would be great :P

I have't been there in a few years but I seem to remember that the inside was just as impressive as the outside.
Great pictures there .

Very cool. I love the architecture and the intricate detail on the Viking knotwork. Thanks for sharing your photos.
