Spiders and bats are the top two for me. They've always been apart of the Halloween decor growing up. I remember when I used to doodle monsters and Halloween creatures on my notes in school during class. I always included a spider and a bat along with the witches, ghosts, werewolves, vampires and skeletons.
Next would be rats and crows. Both are prevalent in my haunt. Owls and snakes seem to be gaining popularity, too.
As for black cats, I refuse to use them in my haunt. A couple years back, I had two (real) black cats disappear around Halloween, never to be seen again. I can't help but think something awful in the name of Halloween happened to them. Ever since, I just can't support the use of black cats in Halloween decor. Of course, I know this is extremely hypocritical. After all, what's the difference between "villaifying" (sp?) cats or spiders, bats, rats, snakes, owls, frogs, crows, etc.?

I really think of black cats first, but there's always owls, bats, rats, mice, crows, and snakes. I think society/movies/books and tv shows perpetuate these images to us as being Halloween-ish.

I love this thread! I am actually watching Disneys Halloween Treat as I type and its the windmill short filled with animals. I first off always think of Owls. I then think of Crows, Ravens, Cats, Bats, Rats, Mice, Snakes, Wolfs and of course even though there are arachnids...SPIDERS!
Oh and watch this to see what I am enjoying with my cider

Thanks for that link Mr Gris, I've not seen that before, will have to watch the whole thing sometime soon.
I suppose I mostly think of ravens and crows, but also black cats and spiders. I've never especially associated owls with Hallowe'en. I really like owls, they're a year-round thing for me. Used to have a jumper (sweater) with an owl on it with beaded eyes but it got ruined

Any animal that is either black or orange - ravens, crows, black cats, foxes, wolves, mice and rats, bats, spiders. Owls and toads, as well. Anything creepy and crawly!

Def. a black cat for me. It represents the familiar for a witch and they are a staple of Halloween. Though so is a toad but, I really don't want to cuddle with one of those.

Cats (though I make sure my black one stays in around Halloween. Actually all of them, but especially Piglet) and Bats. It's a magic thing, they're both magical hence my association with Halloween.
a plague on both your houses
