Hi everyone. I have a problem that I would like some "creative" solutions. I have a street lamp across the street that absolutely kills my light show. Anyone have any experience getting their local city to shut off a street lamp for a night or a weekend?..or any way I can shut the light off myself?
Any help would be appreciated...![]()

It's called "BB gun" and pleading ignorance....

I feel your pain. I have one about 30 feet out directly across from my balcony. I'm hoping someone loses control of their car and knocks it down.

Well I am lucky, the lamp is on the far side of my neighbors yard and we have 2 huge spruce trees between us so my yard is in completely in shadows. Good luck having them turn it off as I am sure they will say it is a safety concern. Could you maybe build a wall out of plywood or styro to cast a big enough shadow? Paint the wall like an old castle wall?

Well I was trying to avoid the BB gun route... then I thought of maybe draping something over the light... then I thought...FIRE... then there's the whole pointing a laser at the photo eye... and then I was back to the BB gun idea...

You could call them and ask if they would disconnect it for one night. The worst they could say is no. I don't advocate the BB gun idea. Would the laser on the photo eye work?

There are other holidays besides Halloween? When did they start that?

I would call the city, they may be willing to turn it off. A city not too far from me had a bunch of streetlights turned off to save money in 2010. Now they are turning the streetlights back on (I guess now they have money?) Anyways, the city will let you get neighbor agreement and if nobody had a problem they will let you keep your streelight off. See below:

The problem is if you call the city and then decide the BB gun is your only route, it would be hard to play ignorance.

I have the exact same problem. Big ole streetlight attached to the power line pole & it's so bright it's like daylight in our front yard & the street in front of us & the neighbor's yard.
Someone suggested taking a big spotlight & shining it on the sensor for the light (ours are light sensitive, they'll come on when it gets dark whether it's from a storm or night). I didn't try this though, the spotlight was off with someone hunting.Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, the best damn little band you should be listening to!

Why not make it a scary part of the atmosphere? Get one of those doggie protective cones...the ones they put on dogs when they have an injury? Spray it red, get a large ladder and put the cone on the light, so the light falling through the cone is all bloodyyyyy.
edit- you put it on the same way you'd put it on a dog, with the flare side facing up. you could duct tape it to the pole, it wouldn't be a fire hazard, so the city probably won't say anything.
