I visited a Spirit Store (we have a few open up around this time of the year in Canada) today and came to find out that the prices were a lot higher this year it seemed.

What I found funny was there was this younger gentleman working there and he conversed with me almost the entire time I was in the store and he admitted the prices were high!! I almost laughed when he said that..any item I was interested in he was like yeah that's "too much" or "you can make it for cheaper." LOL

I was wondering what does everyone else think? And or see your local spirit store?

The Walmarts around here have amazing prices, in comparison to other stores, this year on some light up and animated props I'm finding..

I bought one of the full-size walgreens skellys @ $30. My brother just stopped by and said that they had the same one (maybe not exact) for $50. That's a 40% markup.
And I agree that alot of their stuff could be made for cheaper, but they're great for getting in the spirit and stealing ideas.

I wait till after Halloween- they will mark everything down 50% off before they leave town. I went in the other day and the props weren't working, alot of the smaller stuff was the same as last year. Disappointed.

I've been in great stores and not so great stores. My nearest is one of the not so great. No prop displays whatsoever, just a big stack of boxed props toward the back of the store. It just seems lazy. No one greets you or offers help on anything. They all just look at you like they wish you'd hurry up and leave.

Drive an hour further and there's a store that's like a haunter's Disneyland! Music playing, elaborate displays of everything they sell, and employees that seem to love what they do.

It's just hit or miss. For the most part, I'm glad stores like Spirit exist at all. As for Spirit's prices, yes, they are high. Never go without a coupon!

I love Spirits, I mean the idea of having a Hallowen superstore and making unique props....But, they over charge for everything and alot of the props are soo poorly made that they are not worth buying. I am very leary of buying store bought stuff, especially animated props because they are just junk. You spend alot of money and in some cases the prop stops working after a few hours. My home made stuff gets used every year and has never failed or broken yet.

We've got 3 stores opening in the city and they all still look like they're weeks away from opening. They just added a new one to their store finder Friday. What's the deal?

Based on what I saw last year, most of the stuff was way overpriced. I'm glad they're around though, because in a weird way they raise the bar a bit for the bigger retailers as far as selection goes.

My local spirit was 99% costumes this year and 1% props which seemed to be either little in stock or mostly sold out already! I was pretty disappointed, I understand selling a high percentage of costumes but 1% props? I am hoping not all the Spirit stores here are like that this year and will check out others. The Halloween City near us had great selection and prices though.
As I was going up the stair, I met a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. I wish, I wish he'd go away.

I love the props. I really think the quality has gotten better. The animatronics do need to be handled with care. 100% of my props that I have purchased in the past 3 years from Spirit still run perfectly.

They have a price match at the store for any advertised item. But we do know a lot of the big props are exclusive.

A lot of the non-exclusive props seem to be cheaper at Spirit than other retailers this year (e.g. John Doe). I do agree that some little accessories can sometimes be found cheaper at somewhere like walgreens, but not a lot of realistic stuff there.

I am partial to Spirit since they really are responsible for me really getting into Halloween and also that they are a great sponsor of the forum. I would still be giving a great review if they were not.

I am curious about the stores where people say that they are mostly costumes. Is it that way the whole season? I wonder if that is because of space, location... or ??? I know I am all about the props and accessories.

I completely forgot Spirit endorses this forum, that said it does not justify their over pricing.

I understand, believe me I took business in university, at the end of the day it's a business and profit is what these people are after. Although at some point you have to start looking at your customers and or demographic.

Correct me if I'm wrong but judging by the cars (you can't really judge by the clothing because most people "dress down" on weekends) in the driveway at any spirit store here - it tells me the demographic is hard working (average pay) and "well off" individuals (people who maybe gross $35,000 to 60,000 annually) at best. I do not see Lambo's or BMW's at most Spirit Stores. What's my point? Well maybe a price drop would be beneficial to most or advertise the price match someone mentioned.

I myself almost bought a few items at Spirit yesterday, but then my money saving side kicked in and said forget it I can find these items at other Halloween shops that pop up closer to October. I'm back in college to finish a program and I can stand to save some money.

More over, each year I see people walking out with costumes or $30 props and hardly ever those ones that go for over $100 and more.

The store is amazing that's a given but the prices I think drive people away..but hey who knows maybe they do better than break even and that's why they can afford to open up stores all over..

Either way the consensus on here remains - too pricey, the props break easy (what's the return policy)? and they are there to raise the bar for other retailers.

I just think with the economy still facing a crisis (especially what's happening in the US) that people will be turned off by say a $29.99 light up pumpkin (as cool as the damn thing is it goes for $20.00 at other outlets here)..

Went to one yesterday, it was set up very nice with most of there animated props displayed nicely. However hardly any were available for purchase. Don't know if they sold out already or what. The lady did tell me we still have tons of boxes to put out. Local Target is starting to put there stuff out too, a lot of the items seem to be very similar just different packages and prices.
